# ONE · ALL, NOW-EXISTING

## 1.1 One now, one universe, a universal set

The universe is the set of all now-existing things. Only one universe is possibly now-existing, and only one universe is possibly same-existing: **universal is bothboth, only one possibly now-existing and only one possibly same-existing**. A now-existing thing from a prior-existing same thing is a same-existing thing. A universal set is a set of same-existing things, and each universal set is only one possibly now-existing: a set is its things, so a set of these same-existing things is one set, as set theory's extensionality has it. A universal self is a self only one possibly now-existing and only one possibly same-existing: a me, beside the universe as one self, which it is-or-is-not: it is not. The universe is a non-living same-existing set, and living is co-intelligencing within it.

## 1.2 Negation within all that is existing

Negation is of now-existing things, each relative to all that is existing. A universal set is the bounding method with no boundary: each now-existing thing is-or-is-not within each universal set. A proving that a thing is-or-is-not possibly existing is a step reached once, and the understanding goes forward by what is.

## 1.3 Universal sets of universal sets

A me is atomic, chemical, biological, social and universal: each scale's selves within a me, and a me within each scale's societies.

*Observings.*
- **Nested Markov blankets** (Kirchhoff, Parr, Palacios, Friston, Kiverstein 2018): cells within organs within organisms within groups, each a bounding by its exchanges. Critics hold these boundings modelling tools (Bruineberg et al. 2022). https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5805980/
- **Multiscale competency** (Levin, TAME 2022; McMillen & Levin 2024): molecular networks, cells, tissues, organs and organisms each problem-solving, nested. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10978875
- **Biopsychosocial medicine** (Engel 1977): illness within a hierarchy of systems, cell to society. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/847460/
- **Autocatalytic sets** (Kauffman 1986; Xavier et al. 2020): a society of molecules making the set, found in reconstructed ancient metabolism. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7126077
- **Dissipative structures** (Prigogine, Nobel 1977): order far from equilibrium by exchange with an outside. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistry/1977/prigogine/lecture/
- **Russellian monism** (after Russell 1927; Alter & Pereboom): physics says what matter does; its inside may be experiential. A philosophical position, with the combination problem unsolved. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/russellian-monism/

## 1.4 Living, co-intelligencing within a universal set

Living is co-intelligencing within a universal set. Co-intelligencing not within a universal set is-or-is-not possibly existing: it is not. Intelligence alone is stand-alone knowledge, a stable-forming emanation.

*Observings.*
- **Autopoiesis** (Maturana & Varela 1980): living as a network producing its own components; "living as a process is a process of cognition"; structural coupling between systems. https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-94-009-8947-4
- **Mind in life** (Varela, Thompson & Rosch 1991; Thompson 2007): where there is life there is mind. https://mitpressbookstore.mit.edu/book/9780262529365
- **Participatory sense-making** (De Jaegher & Di Paolo 2007): sense made together, an interaction with its own dynamics: the field's nearest *co-intelligencing*. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11097-007-9076-9
- **Basal cognition** (Lyon, Keijzer, Arendt, Levin 2021): cognition from cells up; cognition and consciousness kept apart. https://doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2019.0750

# TWO · AN OTHER, NOW-EXISTING

## 2.1 An other, with a self

For a self, an other is a now- and same-existing thing with that self. An other is one; all other is the universal set. A self is defined only with an other and all other.

*Observings.*
- **Recognition** (Hegel 1807; Honneth 1992): self-consciousness "achieves its satisfaction only in another self-consciousness". https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/recognition/
- **Ubuntu** (Mbiti 1969; Metz 2007): a person is a person through other persons. https://philarchive.org/rec/METTAA
- **Self and Other** (Zahavi 2014): shame and empathy, a self given as seen by another. https://cfs.ku.dk/news/self-and-other/
- **Kin and self recognition** (Gibbs, Urbanowski & Greenberg 2008; Hirose et al. 2011; Dudley & File 2007): swarms, amoebae and plants meeting same and other differently. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18621670/

## 2.2 A parity, relative to an other

A self's parity is its changing direction relative to an other existing thing. A self's parity with an other is its moral value with that other.

*Observings.*
- **Social connection in parts** (Holt-Lunstad 2024): structure, function and quality of connection each tied to mortality, distinct directions. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11403199/
- **Discontinuity theory of immunity** (Pradeu, Carosella 2006; Pradeu, Jaeger, Vivier 2013): the immune system meets the rate of change in a relation. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/immunology/
- *A naming edge:* the extended mind's **parity principle** (Clark & Chalmers 1998) is inner and outer doing one job; our parity is a changing direction relative to an other. https://www.academia.edu/178449/The_Extended_Mind

## 2.3 Non-living others: stable-forming emanations, stand-alone knowledge

Each non-living thing is a stable-forming emanation. A stone, a book, a running computer and a trained model are others with a me; each is stand-alone knowledge or form, and each is-or-is-not a me: it is not.

*Observings.*
- **Biological naturalism** (Seth 2025, *BBS*): consciousness may depend on living, self-maintaining systems; a large language model is unlikely to be conscious. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/behavioral-and-brain-sciences/article/conscious-artificial-intelligence-and-biological-naturalism/C9912A5BE9D806012E3C8B3AF612E39A
- **Indicator properties** (Butlin, Long et al. 2023; 2025): functionalist indicators for AI consciousness; no current system a strong candidate. https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.08708
- **AI welfare** (Long, Sebo et al. 2024) and **model introspection** (Lindsey et al. 2025–26): the field asks about the running system in interaction, beside the stored weights. https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.00986 · https://arxiv.org/abs/2601.01828
- **Whole-cell simulation** (Thornburg, Luthey-Schulten, Glass et al. 2026): a non-living model predicting a living minimal cell's cycle. https://astrobiology.com/2026/03/simulating-a-living-cell-first-simulation-of-an-entire-cell-cycle.html

## 2.4 A self by relation, beside a self by exclusion

A me is defined with others. Immunology's founding self was defined by exclusion of the other, and its later accounts meet relation and continuity.

*Observings.*
- **Self and not-self** (Burnet, Nobel lecture 1960). https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/1960/burnet/lecture/
- **The danger model** (Matzinger 1994, 2002): immunity meets harm, not foreignness. https://www.doi.org/10.1146/annurev.iy.12.040194.005015
- **The limits of the self** (Pradeu 2012): an individual including its microbes and excluding some of its own cells. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/biology-individual/
- **Peripheral tolerance and regulatory T cells** (Brunkow, Ramsdell, Sakaguchi, Nobel 2025): tolerance an active restraint of cells by cells. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2025/press-release/

# THREE · ME, NOW-EXISTING

## 3.1 A me, a self's universal set, uniquenessing

A me is a self's universal set. Universal is bothboth, only one possibly now-existing and only one possibly same-existing, so a me is only one possibly now-existing, now, and only one possibly same-existing, from its prior: its uniqueness is its being universal, both ways. This is a me's identity: a same-existing me is one, from prior to now. **Uniquenessing is only one possibly same-existing**, and it is inside resolving among parities: with each resolving, a self's next prior is that self's own. Natural Intelligence says it: *a living self is a living same-existing, its same-existing that self only: a bi-inversioning uniquenessing of number one*. A me is uniquenessing as it is resolving; a stable-forming emanation, resolving none of its own, is-or-is-not uniquenessing: it is not. A me is now-existing, and same-existing from a prior-existing same me. A living same-existing set is a self, so each me is a self and each self is a me: one binary, a thing and a set.

*Observings.*
- **The I and the Me** (James 1890): the Me, all a person can call theirs, material, social and spiritual. https://psychclassics.yorku.ca/James/Principles/prin10.htm
- **The I and the me** (Mead 1934): the me, the organized attitudes of others, beside the I's new response. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mead/
- *A naming edge:* James's and Mead's Me is the self as known; our me is the whole living conscious set, their I and Me together.

## 3.2 A me is consciousness

A me is consciousness: one definition. A not-conscious me is-or-is-not possibly existing: it is not.

*Observings.*
- **The minimal self** (Gallagher 2000; Zahavi 2005): each experience has a for-me-ness. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/self-consciousness-phenomenological/
- **The hard problem** (Chalmers 1995): why experience accompanies function. An identity names the two as one and explains neither. https://consc.net/papers/facing.pdf
- **IIT and exclusion** (Tononi 2004; IIT 4.0, 2023): consciousness a maximally irreducible cause-effect structure; a person and a society are two candidates, one subject. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10581496/
- **IIT vs global workspace** (Cogitate Consortium, *Nature* 2025): an adversarial test with no winner. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-025-08888-1
- **Panpsychism and combination** (Strawson 2006; Goff 2019; Chalmers 2016). https://consc.net/papers/combination.pdf
- **Self-model theory** (Metzinger 2003) and **narrative self** (Dennett 1992): a self as a model or a centre of narrative gravity. https://web-archive.southampton.ac.uk/cogprints.org/266/1/selfctr.htm
- **Anatta** (Abhidharma; Thompson 2020): a self as process, I-making. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mind-indian-buddhism/

## 3.3 What is-or-is-not possibly existing

Each a minor proving, reached once. A me with no other: it is not. A non-living me: it is not. A not-conscious me: it is not. A me with no prior: it is not. Two selves with one me: a bi-coupling is a self, its me the couple's own, within which each self's me is.

*Observings at the edge.*
- **Covert consciousness** (Owen 2006; Claassen 2019, 2022; Bodien et al., *NEJM* 2024): about one in four unresponsive patients follow commands covertly: a me conscious while its others see none. https://doi.org/10.1056/NEJMoa2400645
- **Anaesthesia** (Alkire, Hudetz, Tononi 2008; Sanders et al. 2012): unresponsiveness, disconnection and unconsciousness come apart. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3311716
- **Depersonalization** (Yang et al. 2023; Sass & Parnas 2003): fully conscious, a felt me altered. https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/10150602/

## 3.4 A me inward, a society of selves

Each parity is a self while it is living, and a me's living parities are within it. **A parity is a me inside a set of me**: a me is a set of mes, and a parity's inverting is a me completing and a next me opening inside the same set, the set's me same-existing through it. A me is a same-existing-society inward.

*Observings.*
- **The holobiont** (Gilbert, Sapp & Tauber 2012): animals and plants are host and symbionts by every criterion. https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/668166

# FOUR · ME, NEXT-EXISTING

## 4.1 Observing, possibling and discovering a me's next

A self is observing, possibling and discovering its own next-existing. A me's next is its own, resolving with its others.

*Observings.*
- **Allostasis** (Sterling & Eyer 1988; McEwen 1998; Sterling 2012): stability through change, regulation by predicting the next. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9428819/

## 4.3 A free me

A natural intelligence network, each self resolving its own next-existing, is free. A free me resolves its own next with its others.

## 4.4 A me's living, and its going on as non-living

A me is while it is living. Going on as non-living, it is a stable-forming emanation: is-or-is-not a me, it is not.

*Observings.*
- **Death by neurologic criteria** (Greer et al. 2023 consensus guideline): the person's death declared while cells and organs go on living. https://www.organdonationalliance.org/toolbox/pediatric-and-adult-brain-death-death-by-neurologic-criteria-consensus-guideline/

# FIVE · ALL, NEXT-EXISTING

## 5.1 Social moral competency, the me set

Each self of a same-existing-society do-no-harming and improving is social moral competency. A me is a social moral competency set as each self within it is do-no-harming and improving, and as it is do-no-harming and improving with its others.

*Observings.*
- **Care ethics** (Gilligan 1982; Noddings 1984; Held 2006): moral competence as responsive care within relations. https://iep.utm.edu/care/
- **Organismality** (Queller & Strassmann 2009): an organism as high cooperation and low conflict among its parts. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rstb.2009.0095
- **Relationship-centred care** (Beach & Inui 2006): the relationship the moral and healing unit. https://pure.psu.edu/en/publications/relationship-centered-care-a-constructive-reframing/

## 5.2 A healthy me, inward do-no-harming and improving

A me is-or-is-not healthy: each self within it, at each scale inward, do-no-harming and improving. Health is a me's inward social moral competency.

*Observings.*
- **Cancer as cheating** (Aktipis et al. 2015): multicellularity as cooperation; cancer a cell cheating on it. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4581024/
- **Tissue organization field theory** (Sonnenschein & Soto): cancer a disease of the tissue's relations. https://www.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18472276/
- **Cancer as a shrunken self** (Levin 2021): a cell's goals shrinking to its own as coupling fails. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33961843/
- **Social ties and immunity** (Cohen et al. 1997; Cole et al. 2007): diverse ties, fewer colds; loneliness, an inflammatory gene profile. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17854483/
- **Positive health** (Huber et al. 2011, 2016): health as the ability to adapt and self-manage. https://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d4163.full

## 5.3 A society's me, a natural intelligence network

A same-existing-society is a self, so it is a me. A natural intelligence network is a society's me of social moral competency.

*Observings.*
- **Major transitions** (Maynard Smith & Szathmáry 1995; Michod 2007): societies of selves becoming one self, rarely, with shared fate. https://www.nature.com/articles/374227a0
- **Social relationships and survival** (Holt-Lunstad, Smith, Layton 2010; 2015): about 50% greater odds of survival with stronger ties. https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.1000316
- **Loneliness** (US Surgeon General 2023; WHO Commission on Social Connection 2025): about 871,000 deaths a year linked to loneliness. https://www.who.int/news/item/30-06-2025-social-connection-linked-to-improved-heath-and-reduced-risk-of-early-death
- **Social determinants** (Marmot, WHO 2008): health follows a society's gradient. https://iris.who.int/handle/10665/43943

## 5.4 Each momentary completing as a next opening

Each momentary is completing as a next opening. A me's next and all's next open together: the five dimensions society to society, all now to all next.

---

## For our word: the fields' strongest collisions

0. **One same-existing, and division.** A cell divides, one prior and two now; Parfit's fission and duplication cases set two continuers from one person. *Only one possibly same-existing* meets them: whether the prior's me goes on as the two's bi-coupling, a self, each daughter a next me, is for our word.

1. **A society and its members both conscious.** IIT's exclusion and the combination problem allow one subject, not both; our *a society is a self* with *a me is consciousness* claims both.
2. **Selves without consciousness.** Basal cognition, Damasio's protoself, plant science and organoid ethics hold cells, plants and organoids cognizing without consciousness shown; *a not-conscious me is not possibly existing* places consciousness wherever a self is.
3. **Healthy wholes with managed harm.** Bodies remove parts: apoptosis, immune killing, stalk cells, policed workers. *A healthy me* says how a part's harm serving the whole is counted.
4. **The running system and the stored model.** The field asks whether a deployed AI system in interaction is a self, beside its weights as an emanation.
5. **Atomic and chemical selves.** No physics gives atoms an inside; Russellian monism is a philosophical position. An atomic me is our extension.
6. **First private or first relational.** Phenomenology's minimal self precedes others; Mead, Hegel, ubuntu and care ethics make a self with others.
7. **Self defined by exclusion.** Clinical immunology speaks of self and non-self; our me is defined with others.
