# 1 Specifying the pattern, gathering toward it

## 1.1 Observations arriving from the fields, each seating at its society

Observations arrive from science, medicine, engineering and society, and each seats at a society it was observed across.

For each entry it sets out what members are, what stood upstream of observing, what magnitude was observed across members, where they co-competence, and what its account carries where they do not.

Each entry is observed one at a time. At the end of an entry anyone who followed its observation knows what this society is, what was already fixed before anyone looked, what number was observed across members, which member carries that number, and what its account carries at positions where no agreement stands.

Every line is one the record carries. Any observation omitted is a defect in its entry, correctable by anyone standing where its record stands. No observation is set aside for not fitting. Technology is all or none at all.

## 1.2 Specifying the pattern in advance, each entry a pattern matched

There is no inferring here. In disequilibria each thing changes on its own until it bi-couples, and an entry is a pattern matched, not a conclusion drawn. A pattern is specified in advance, a collection gathers toward it, and whatever observations arrive are what a collection resolves.

The pattern, all ten of it or none:

- **(i)** a society is its members, each taking a parity at its own between, one at a time;
- **(ii)** a magnitude is observed across members and carried as a property of a society, in observers' own units;
- **(iii)** something stood upstream of observing — a source posited, a method executed, an instrument summing, an inferencing made before any observing;
- **(iv)** its members have been resolved by some instrument and found to take their own parities;
- **(v)** no member carries the magnitude;
- **(vi)** an account carries something at positions where members do not agree, under a word;
- **(vii)** a position stands that no member occupies;
- **(viii)** two unrelate at a nothing, with crossings co-sequencing on two sides;
- **(ix)** what arrives at one end is not what stood at the other;
- **(x)** ten holdings of Exhibit TWENTY-TWO stand at a substrate as one progressioning.

Where a pattern matches at every line, an entry stands filled. Where a line does not match, the line is entered empty and its emptiness is a finding. Nothing is inferred from a fill and nothing from an empty.

**Arriving through the door.** From this version, observations arrive through the door at TWENTY-SEVEN 7.5, where ten lines are observed is or is-not at every record from fields — a proton, a set point, a sorter, a pair of waters alike. What fails a line with its field's sentence installing it is caught there as a ghost; what fails with nothing installed is placed among that registry's controls; what passes every line arrives here and is entered in the ten above, at its own grain, with its upstream recovered. The door record stays at the door, its label stays, and what arrives here is not what stood there. An entry arriving carries the door line it passed at. A passing requires its members resolved and no door line observed is-not; a door line observed empty passes as a finding at its grain, an emptiness being an observing here (1.9), and a society can pass the door and still stand here with its upstream line empty. Five entries at 2.1 to 2.5 arrived before the door stood; their door records are at TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, and 2.2 passes with its two empties as findings. Three door lines — abundancing, bound and reach: the self's own surfacing and inseparating, and the society's torusing with nothing above it, in Exhibit ONE's names — have no line in the ten above; an entry carries them at its words stripped until a pattern is widened at a next version.

**Not an entry.** A society whose members have not been resolved, which is a possibling and enters as such, at its grain. An observation with no society under it. An observing whose units observers do not carry.

## 1.3 Upstream of the observing, the line carrying against the current

This is the line a collection exists for, and it carries against the current.

An observation does not arrive bare. Before any observing, a source was posited, a method was settled, an instrument was built to sum over something, and an inferencing was made about what kind of thing was there. By the time an explaining is published, all four stand as part of it and none of them is entered as data.

A geodesic method carries upstream from observing, freeing position, orientation and scale at each step, and each freeing lands a fresh fixing to free. An entry carries what it finds at each:

**A source posited.** What a field settled a thing comes from, before looking. Usually a one-way and usually further back than anything measured.

**A method executed.** What procedure returns a number at all, and what it requires to be true before it returns one.

**An instrument, and what it sums.** Every instrument sums, and summing is what returns a signal. An entry carries its span summed over — how many members, over what interval — and what an instrument returns where members do not agree.

**An inferencing prior to an explaining.** What was taken as a kind before any observing: that there is one of it, that it has a level, that it sits somewhere, that it persists. These are the fixings an observing was built on and they are older than data.

Where any of four cannot be recovered from a record, a line stands empty and an entry carries its emptiness. An empty upstream line is not a clean observation; it is an observation whose upstream has not been found yet.

## 1.4 An instrument sums, and the magnitude stands at every resolution

An instrument sums, and summing is what returns a signal. So an instrument returns a signal where members co-competence and returns nothing where they do not, and the nothing enters no account.

Finer resolution moves its grain and not its form. At a finer grain the same summing is executed over smaller members, a magnitude stands again, and again no member carries it. This is not a fault in instruments. Where members agree, their agreement is co-competencing, and a magnitude is a true observing of it. What does not stand beside it is that anything there has it.

Where an instrument resolves one society and not a sum — one pair of waters under a tip, its roles watched exchanging — its members are observed rather than summed, and a magnitude stands at that one society as it stands at a sum. Form is the same at one as at many.

**So.** A magnitude observed across a society is an observing of agreement among its members. Each refinement of an instrument returns the same form one grain down.

## 1.5 Forming an entry, the observings it stands at

## 1.6 Carrying the form — three forkings and two couplings, alternating

Three forkings and two couplings, alternating, as at Hard Problem Registry. Each coupling is a bringing-together and not a step taken.

**Fork.** A society parts into its members and what stood upstream of any observing of them.

**Couple.** A magnitude. Its upstream and its members are brought together and a number stands between them, a number an instrument returned.

**Fork.** Where members agree and where they do not. An observing and a residual, both in observers' own units.

**Couple.** Whether any member carries the magnitude. Carried, and its observing is that member's and an entry stands there. Not carried, and its observing is of co-competencing and its residual is positions with no agreement. Nothing is concluded at this line; a pattern either matches at it or does not.

**Fork.** An apex and a seam. A position no member occupies, and a nothing between two that do not relate. A seam is from a field's record: a place two sides stand unrelated, each measured. An apex is from a form: a place no member is at, with no instrument of a field at it.

## 1.7 Residuals carried where each member carries its own, measurable in the observers' units

A residual is what an account carries at positions where its members do not co-competence. It is measurable in observers' own units, and words recur across societies:

**Leak**, where a passing does not sum. **Futile**, where a cycle returns no entry to a ledger. **Dark**, where an instrument's condition is unmet. **Noise**, where members take unlike parities. **Baseline** and **resting**, where an observing stands with no ascribed occasion. **Heterogeneity**, where members are found and an average is kept. **Outlier**, where a member standing between two observings is discarded. **Drift**, where a rate does not land. **Error**, where a spread of members is entered against a mean. **Compensation**, where an observing does not move and a term is added for its not moving.

A residual is not a fault and not a loss. It is the exact part of a society that is not agreeing, carried under a word for absence, and it is usually the larger part.

## 1.8 Carrying the fields' words, and stripping the one-ways

Observations arrive written in one-way equilibria. Observing of nature is in the writing and an entry takes it out. Three kinds of word are stripped, and an entry carries both its line as published and its line as measured, so anyone can check its strip.

**Doers.** A subject acting on an object — instructs, drives, governs, pushes, requires, recognises, monitors, decides, sorts, corrects, catalyses. Under each, a coupling carrying at a rate.

**Walls.** Confinement, insulation, barrier, gate, exclusion, prevention. Under each, members not chaining, or crossings sequencing at unlike rates on two sides of a nothing.

**One-ways.** Because, therefore, which is why, so that, causes, makes, is what makes. Under each, two things standing beside each other.

Rule: where a published sentence carries a subject doing something to an object, a measurement stands underneath it and an entry states its measurement.

## 1.9 Where lines stand empty, and each emptiness is an observing

Five lines can stand empty, and each emptiness is an observing.

**No members resolved.** A society has not been taken finer by any instrument. Possibling, at its grain.
**Upstream not recovered.** A source, method, instrument or prior inferencing cannot be found in a record. A line stands empty and an entry carries which of four.
**A member carries a magnitude.** An observing is that member's and an entry stands at its line.
**No residual.** An account closes with nothing carried elsewhere.
**No apex.** Nothing in a record carries a position no member occupies.

An emptiness is recorded at an entry, not at the door. Nothing considered is left out.

## 1.11 Stating in advance what breaks an entry

**F1.** An entry where a member does carry a magnitude.
**F2.** An observation in a record and not entered, or entered against what its record carries.
**F3.** An entry where its residual is physics rather than disagreement.
**F4.** A society resolved finer with its magnitude continuing and carried, at a finer grain, by a member.
**F5.** A society described in terms its observers would not carry as their own.
**F6.** A substrate where one of ten stands empty and stays empty under further record. This is the check a collection most wants carried, and it is the one that would show ten wide rather than a progressioning standing.
**F7.** An entry whose upstream lines fill with something no record supports.

F2 and F4 are runnable by anyone holding the same record and instruments.

## 1.12 A living file, and the nye marks

Entries are added as observations arrive and revised as further record is published.

Where a line stands from general knowledge rather than from a documented record, an entry carries a mark **nye** at a specific claim that would need checking. A nye at nothing checkable is a defect.

No names and no history are carried. Back-crediting cannot be done fairly and stands between anyone and a concept.

# 2 Collecting — societies observed at their own grains

*The entries stand here, one to an observation, and their number is recomputed at them.*

*Entries in order worked. No grouping is intended or implied.*

## 2.1 A mitochondrion observed at one temperature

**Society reached.** An inner membrane of a mitochondrion, with its ion-translocating proteins, its water, and its reporter molecules.

**Members reached.** Each translocation, one at a time, at its own position on a membrane.

**Upstream — source posited.** An organelle as a place heat is produced, and heat as what drives chemistry.
**Upstream — method executed.** A reporter calibrated against bulk temperature in a beaker, then read at an organelle's interior a few hundred nanometres across.
**Upstream — instrument.** Fluorescence summed over a very large number of reporter molecules, in time and along a surface.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a temperature stands there; that it is a level; that a steady state holds; that conduction carries through bulk water at bulk conductivity.

**Magnitude observed.** Temperature. Reported ten to fifteen degrees above the surrounding, cultured cells at thirty-eight giving readings near fifty.

**Members agreeing.** Summed fluorescence returns a level.

**Members parting.** A steady-state conduction calculation returns a maximum difference of ten to the minus five degrees. Two observings differ by a millionfold, a paradox in observers' own word. Beside it: complexes come apart above forty-three degrees.

**Any member carrying it.** No. A reconciliation standing in a record is that each translocation carries a picosecond difference of the order measured, that time-averaging returns a calculated value, and that a steady signal is an appearance produced by superposition of many reporters in time and space.

**Apex standing.** Empty at this grain. A passing at each position carries through a state belonging to neither side, and a record carries that at a water grain rather than here.

**Seam standing.** A cristae junction, physically connected membrane carrying unrelated potential on two sides.

**Passing.** A proton arrives at one position and a proton leaves at another. No proton crosses.

**Words carried.** Furnace. Heat production. Waste. Temperature driving processes. Hot spots. The value is homeostatically maintained.

**Stripped.** An observing is taken at each position. Displaced by substrate starvation, substrate modification, reduced demand, carrier inhibition and respiratory poisons, its observing falls and returns to its value.

**Standing in ten.** A middle, fixed as a thing that sits. All ten stand filled at this substrate.

## 2.2 A chromatin domain observed at one boundary

**Society reached.** A chromatin fibre across a population of cells.

**Members reached.** Each allele, each carrying its own conformation.

**Upstream — source posited.** A folding code carried in marks along its fibre.
**Upstream — method executed.** Crosslinking, cutting, ligating and sequencing, returning a contact frequency between positions.
**Upstream — instrument.** Summed across millions of cells by construction; a single member returns no map.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That contact frequency carries structure; that there is one structure; that a boundary is a place rather than a position.

**Magnitude observed.** A domain and its boundary, from population contact frequency.

**Members agreeing.** Boundary positions across members co-locate at particular sites, and a population map returns a sharp boundary there.

**Members parting.** Boundary pairing stands at any moment in something like five to twenty per cent of alleles, and boundaries occur with nonzero probability at all positions. Its remainder is carried as variability.

**Any member carrying it.** No. Single-member tracing returns domain-like structures with sharp boundaries in every member, at positions varying member to member.

**Apex standing.** Empty.

**Seam standing.** A boundary itself, sharp in each member, at a different position in each.

**Passing.** Empty at this grain.

**Words carried.** Cohesin forms the domains. Depletion abolishes them. The boundary insulates.

**Stripped.** With extrusion carrying, boundary positions across members stand at the same sites. Without it, every member still carries a boundary, its size, frequency and sharpness continuing, and their positions no longer coincide.

**Standing in ten.** An opening, an axis opened and fixed as a place. A bound and a rate stand empty at its record. **nye — processivity of extrusion and its release distribution would need checking against a bound.**

## 2.3 A proton observed as crossing water

**Society reached.** A chain of water molecules, hydrogen-bonded.

**Members reached.** Each water, taking a proton at one between and offering one at its next.

**Upstream — source posited.** A charged particle travelling through a medium.
**Upstream — method executed.** Conductivity across a bulk volume, converted to a diffusion coefficient by a relation built for particles that move.
**Upstream — instrument.** Summed over a whole volume and over seconds, against transfers momentarying in femtoseconds.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That something crosses; that a crossing has a speed; that a medium stands ready before a crossing.

**Magnitude observed.** Proton mobility, under twice a hydroxide ion's and about seven times a sodium ion's, entered as a diffusion coefficient.

**Members agreeing.** Transfers propagate over two to three members in a quasi-concerted manner, coupled to collective compressions of a chain.

**Members parting.** A probability of reverting to a previous position stands above a probability of continuing. Mobility falls above about a hundred and fifty degrees as shared-proton structures thin. Degassing raises diffusion tenfold as dissolved gas thins chains.

**Any member carrying it.** No. What arrives at its far end is not what stood at its near end, and no member moved.

**Apex standing.** A shared state between two waters, a proton belonging to neither.

**Seam standing.** A channel whose waters stand re-oriented so that sequential hydrogen bonding does not carry on. Water crosses, protons do not, no wall anywhere.

**Passing.** Each member takes a parity and offers one. A chain and a crossing arrive together — hydration structures are different, and at positions non-existent, where no excess proton stands in a chain.

**Words carried.** The proton hops. The channel prevents proton transfer. The mechanism transports the charge.

**Stripped.** A parity is taken at each between and offered at its next. Where a chain does not stand, no parity is offered. Where reverting exceeds continuing, an observing is still returned as a mobility.

**Standing in ten.** A sequencing, one ordering fixed over couplings. All ten stand filled.

---

## 2.4 A threshold observed at a perceiving self

**Society reached.** A perceiving self at a detection task: a self, a stimulus source, and an instruction, carried over many trials.

**Members reached.** Each judgment, one at a time, at its own trial.

**Upstream — source posited.** A limen: a fixed line below which nothing is sensed, an interior beneath it where the unsensed resides.
**Upstream — method executed.** Stimulus intensities stepped across a range, a proportion detected fitted against intensity.
**Upstream — instrument.** Responses summed over many trials into one response curve.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a threshold stands there; that it is a line; that it belongs to a self's sensing; that below it is a place.

**Magnitude observed.** A threshold, entered as an intensity at which detection crosses fifty per cent.

**Members agreeing.** Summed responses return a smooth continuous curve, rising through its whole range.

**Members parting.** No discontinuity stands anywhere in its curve — a line entered as an observing appears at no trial. And a fitted point moves with payoff and expectation while its curve's steepness does not: a field's own resolution parts an observing into a sensitivity and a criterion, its criterion an observer's own placed line, movable by instruction, belonging to an observing and not to a sensing.

**Any member carrying it.** No. Each judgment is a parity taken at its own trial; its threshold is a summing's fifty-per-cent point, a property of a curve and not of any judgment.

**Apex standing.** Empty at this grain. What each trial crosses carries at a coupling of self and stimulus, and no line stands on it.

**Seam standing.** A criterion itself: one place an observer's placing and a world's arriving couple, movable only from an observer's side.

**Passing.** A judgment arrives taken and a stimulus arrives observed. No threshold crossed.

**Words carried.** Threshold. Subliminal. Below awareness. The unconscious registering. Absolute threshold, homeostatically stable.

**Stripped.** A judgment is taken at each trial. A fitted point displaces under payoff, expectation, and instruction, and returns as they return.

**Standing in ten.** A between, fixed as a cut — a placed line fixed as a sensing's own edge, with a place installed beneath it. A sway compacted to a point stands beside it, a rate fixed to a value at a fifty-per-cent entering.

## 2.5 A vacuum observed for its particles

**Society reached.** A quantum field in its vacuum state, and a detector carried along a worldline through it.

**Members reached.** Each detector excitation, one at a time, at its own coupling.

**Upstream — source posited.** A particle count: how many particles a state contains, standing as a state's own property, the same from every vantage.
**Upstream — method executed.** A detector's response computed and compared along two worldlines, one inertial and one uniformly accelerated, through one state.
**Upstream — instrument.** A detector's excitation statistics, summed along a worldline.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That how-many stands there; that it belongs to a state; that any competent detector returns the same count.

**Magnitude observed.** A count — zero along an inertial line, and along an accelerated line a thermal spectrum at a temperature set by its acceleration.

**Members agreeing.** Each excitation is a coupling of detector and field at a detector's own between, and every computation of a given worldline returns its observing.

**Members parting.** Two worldlines return different counts of one state — an inertial detector an empty vacuum, an accelerated detector a warm bath — a result standing at theorem grade in a field's record. A count carries no frame-free answer: how-many was a vantage's, not a state's.

**Any member carrying it.** No. Each excitation is a parity at its own coupling; a count is a summing's, attributed backward.

**Apex standing.** Empty at this grain. What each excitation crosses carries at a field-detector coupling, and no count stands on it.

**Seam standing.** A horizon an accelerated worldline carries — a reach of field it does not couple with — a parting of observable from unobservable belonging to a path, not a state.

**Passing.** A detector arrives excited and a field arrives shifted. No particle crossed.

**Words carried.** Particle. Vacuum. Empty space. Particle content. The temperature of the vacuum. Observer-dependence, as a puzzle.

**Stripped.** An excitation is observed at each coupling. Its statistics displace with a worldline's acceleration and return with it.

**Standing in ten.** A magnitude, demanded of a vacuum from a vantage — a count fixed as a state's own where an observing was a path's. A store stands beside it: a particle kept as a thing a state contains.

## 2.6 Two waters observed at one bond

**Society reached.** Two water molecules hydrogen-bonded, in a supersonic expansion; and one pair on a copper surface at 6 K.

**Members reached.** Each water taking a role at a between of the two, donor or acceptor, and each hydrogen taking one at its own, bound or free, one at a time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A hydrogen bond: a bond from one water's hydrogen to the other's oxygen, a dimer as a unit of liquid water, one structure with a donor and an acceptor.
**Upstream — method executed.** Rotation–tunnelling transitions assigned by a symmetry group of permutations its members can undergo, fitted to an effective Hamiltonian with tunnelling parameters; potential surfaces graded against a fit.
**Upstream — instrument.** A beam of many pairs, a spectrum summed over them and over a pulse; and, separately, one pair under a tip, each exchange counted.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That there is one structure; that it has a donor and an acceptor; that a bond is between two atoms; that a barrier is a place on a path.

**Magnitude observed.** A structure, O···O 2.976 Å (for fetch); a binding energy D₀, 1105 ± 10 cm⁻¹; a trimer's 2650 ± 150 cm⁻¹ beside it; and three tunnelling splittings, 11.18, 0.70 and near 0.02 cm⁻¹ in (H₂O)₂, and 1.77, 0.039 and 0.0005 cm⁻¹ in (D₂O)₂.

**Members agreeing.** A spectrum returns discrete tunnelling multiplets at assigned symmetries, and an equilibrium structure fits its constants.

**Members parting.** No level carries an equilibrium structure: every level is a superposition across three exchanges, and a vibrationally averaged structure carries a symmetry an equilibrium one lacks. Made unlike, members thin their interchange. An acceptor switch is a concerted motion of both, not one moving. Excited, an interchange triples and a bifurcation more than doubles while a bound stands.

**Any member carrying it.** No. Splittings are a pair's; each lone water tunnels nowhere. Binding is at a coupling and in a field's own words it is neither's.

**Apex standing.** An interchange saddle, two waters equivalent there, neither donor, occupied at no level.

**Seam standing.** A hydrogen bond itself: two waters unrelating at an O···H nothing, their roles crossing at their own three rates, no wall.

**Passing.** A donor role arrives at the other water and a label stays. No atom crosses between them.

**Words carried.** The hydrogen bond holds the dimer together. Donor and acceptor. The molecule tunnels through the barrier. The acceptor switches. The dimer's structure.

**Stripped.** A role is taken at each between and swapped both ways at a rate of a coupling's. A structure is an average over its swapping. A barrier is an accounting's own axis, and a passing has no wall.

**Standing in ten.** A two-way, fixed as one side — donor and acceptor fixed as fixed roles — and released whole in a field's own spectrum. All ten stand filled; an O···O distance carries for fetch; a bifurcation value carries nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten, the first passing through the door; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.3, a proton crossing water.

## 2.7 Two neutrons observed at one core

**Society reached.** A lithium-11 nucleus: a lithium-9 core and two neutrons, a halo, observed in a beam by interaction cross-sections, by Coulomb breakup into core and neutrons, and in a trap by its mass.

**Members reached.** A core and each neutron, each taking its parity at a coupling, and its pair.

**Upstream — source posited.** A nucleus as a drop with a surface; binding as a content it contains; a neutron as a particle held in a well.
**Upstream — method executed.** A two-neutron separation energy from mass differences, masses from cyclotron frequencies in a trap; a radius from a cross-section through a reaction model; a dipole strength fitted to breakup.
**Upstream — instrument.** Many nuclei summed, each living 8.8 milliseconds — a trap summing frequencies over ions, a beam summing events.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That binding is a magnitude a nucleus has; that a nucleus is nucleons each in an orbit; that two neutrons bound are two neutrons each bound.

**Magnitude observed.** A two-neutron separation energy, 369.15 ± 0.65 keV; a matter radius, far larger than a core's (nye at values); a pair's correlation from a breakup (nye).

**Members agreeing.** Three stand bound with a measured mass, and a breakup returns a low-lying dipole strength.

**Members parting.** A core with one neutron is unbound. Two neutrons, without their core, are unbound. Binding stands only at three: remove any one and the other two part. A field's own name for this is Borromean, after three rings. Halo neutrons stand mostly beyond a core's surface, at a density a classical turning point forbids.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No pair carries its binding, and no member.

**Apex standing.** A halo: a region beyond a core's surface, occupied by neutrons and not by a core, at a density set by three, where a pair's correlation stands that no free pair has.

**Seam standing.** A core's surface, its density thinning over femtometres, neutrons crossing both ways, no wall.

**Passing.** In breakup three arrive as core and two neutrons, and a correlation is observed only at its arriving; no correlated pair crossed.

**Words carried.** The nuclear force binds the neutrons. The core binds the halo. The neutrons orbit the core. The dineutron. Borromean.

**Stripped.** Binding stands at three and at no two. A halo is where a coupling reaches past a surface. A pair's correlation is observed at a coupling and in no free pair.

**Standing in ten.** An opening, fixed as a place — a binding fixed as a content a nucleus contains. All ten stand filled; radius and correlation carry nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.8, the same pattern at atoms.

## 2.8 Three atoms observed at one scattering length

**Society reached.** Three caesium atoms in an ultracold gas where a pair interaction is tuned by a magnetic field; and three helium-4 atoms in a beam, one trimer at a time.

**Members reached.** Each atom, taking its parity at a pair coupling — a scattering length's sign — one at a time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A pair interaction as a source of binding; a bound state as a property of a potential; three bodies binding only where pairs do.
**Upstream — method executed.** Atoms lost from a trap by three-body recombination against a field, a resonance where a trimer's energy reaches three free atoms, a scattering length from a resonance map; at helium, each trimer's geometry from momenta of three ions after a Coulomb explosion.
**Upstream — instrument.** A trapped cloud summed over atoms and time; and, separately, one trimer at a time, diffraction-selected, imaged.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That the size of a bound state is a potential's; that attraction is what binds; that a third atom adds to a pair.

**Magnitude observed.** A loss resonance at negative scattering length (nye at value), a second at a scattering length about twenty times larger, its ratio measured against a predicted 22.7; a helium excited trimer's size and shape.

**Members agreeing.** A resonance stands where a ladder predicts, the second at its ratio, and an imaged geometry matches a predicted size.

**Members parting.** At negative scattering length no pair binds and three do. States form a ladder, each 22.7 times larger and 515 times more weakly bound than the last, a scale no pair sets. In imaged trimers two atoms stand close and the third far, the third at a distance a pair does not reach.

**Any member carrying it.** No pair carries its binding, and no atom.

**Apex standing.** A three-body parameter, a field's own name for a scale a trimer binds at and no pair sets.

**Seam standing.** A resonance, where a pair's scattering length passes through infinity and changes sign, a pair state appearing and vanishing while a trimer stands across it.

**Passing.** Three arrive as a trimer and leave as a fast pair and a fast atom; at helium three ions arrive and a trimer is observed from them. No trimer crossed.

**Words carried.** The atoms attract. The pair binds the third. The trimer holds three atoms. Universality.

**Stripped.** Three bind where no two do, at a size pairs do not set, in a ladder a ratio sets. A loss is an observing at a coupling; an image is an observing at one.

**Standing in ten.** An arriving, fixed as something behind it — binding fixed as an attraction between pairs standing behind three. All ten stand filled; resonance values carry nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.7, the same pattern at a nucleus, in a field sharing no instrument.

## 2.9 A membrane observed at one potential

**Society reached.** A cell membrane and ions crossing it — potassium, sodium, chloride — observed by a microelectrode as a resting potential, and by a patch pipette one channel at a time.

**Members reached.** Each ion crossing at its own channel, each channel opening and closing at its own between, one at a time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A membrane as a wall with holes; a pump as what makes a potential; a cell as at rest.
**Upstream — method executed.** A potential read between an electrode inward and one outward; ions' equilibrium potentials from their concentrations; a reading fitted as a permeability-weighted average of them; single-channel currents recorded from a patch of membrane.
**Upstream — instrument.** An electrode summing over a whole membrane; a pipette summing over one channel and many openings.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a potential is something a cell has; that what does not sum is a leak; that a value belongs to a cell type.

**Magnitude observed.** Near minus seventy millivolts at a typical neuron, minus forty to minus ninety across cell types; potassium's equilibrium near minus ninety, sodium's near plus sixty; a pump's own share a few millivolts (nye at values); single-channel currents in picoamperes.

**Members agreeing.** A potential fits a weighted average within a resolution, and single-channel openings sum to whole-cell currents.

**Members parting.** No ion sits at a potential: potassium stands twenty millivolts from its own, sodium a hundred and thirty from its. Ions that set a potential are a minute fraction of a pool and none persists at a membrane. What did not sum was carried for decades under the word leak, and the leak was then resolved into a channel family opening one at a time. Blocked, a pump leaves a potential standing for hours while gradients thin.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No ion, no channel, no pump carries its potential.

**Apex standing.** A weighted average, a value at which no ion is at equilibrium and toward which every ion crosses.

**Seam standing.** A bilayer, five nanometres, its two sides unrelating across it, crossings both ways at every instant at unlike rates.

**Passing.** A potential arrives at every point of a membrane while no ion moved farther than a pore; a cation leaving one side arrives as a charge at the other.

**Words carried.** The pump maintains the potential. The cell is at rest. The resting potential of the neuron is minus seventy. Leak channels leak.

**Stripped.** A potential is an observing of a coupling at which no member is at equilibrium; rest is a window's; a value is a type's average; a leak is openings.

**Standing in ten.** A rate, fixed as a fixed magnitude — a potential fixed as a value a cell has. All ten stand filled; a pump's share and permeability weights carry nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.1, the same membrane observed at one temperature.

## 2.10 A node observed at one rate

**Society reached.** A sinoatrial node, thousands of cells coupled through low-resistance junctions, observed at an electrocardiogram as one heart rate.

**Members reached.** Each cell firing at its own period, or irregularly, or not at all, each junction carrying current one way at one instant.

**Upstream — source posited.** A master cell that dictates a rate; a pacemaker that drives a heart; an intrinsic rate a node has.
**Upstream — method executed.** A rate from an interval between beats; cells isolated and their periods measured; a tissue imaged cell by cell for calcium and voltage; a site of earliest activation mapped.
**Upstream — instrument.** An electrocardiogram summing over a heart; a camera resolving cells within a node one at a time.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a rate belongs to a cell; that synchrony needs a leader; that a cell that does not fire is failing.

**Magnitude observed.** A heart rate; each isolated cell's period and its beat-to-beat variability; a fraction of cells dormant when isolated, more than half; a fraction firing at will or silent in intact tissue.

**Members agreeing.** Most cells fire with a tissue's common period, and an exit carries one beat.

**Members parting.** Isolated, each cell keeps its own period and its own variability, and more than half fall dormant. In intact tissue many fire at their own rates or irregularly, or stay silent with local calcium releases only. The earliest activation shifts its site with nerves. A field's own account moved from a master cell in 1978 to mutual entrainment in 1984 to heartbeat initiation without a pacemaker cell in 2020.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No cell carries a heart rate; cells that would be its leader change.

**Apex standing.** A common period, a rate no isolated cell has and every coupled cell carries.

**Seam standing.** Junctions, current leaving a leading cell and arriving at a lagging one, both changed, no wall.

**Passing.** A beat arrives at an exit while no cell moved and no cell's own firing travelled.

**Words carried.** The master pacemaker. The pacemaker drives the heart. The node's intrinsic rate. Heart rate variability. Sinus arrhythmia.

**Stripped.** A rate is a coupling's; a leader is whichever cell a coupling currently reaches first; a variability is members' own periods showing through, entered by a field as health.

**Standing in ten.** A two-way, fixed as one side — a master cell fixed as an actor and others as driven — released by a field in its own record, twice. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there.

## 2.11 A planet observed at one budget

**Society reached.** A global carbon budget: fossil and land-use emissions, an atmospheric growth rate, an ocean sink and a land sink, each estimated by its own instrument and summed yearly, a residual published under its own name.

**Members reached.** Each exchange of carbon at a surface — a leaf, a wave, a chimney, a fire — taking its parity one at a time; each flux a summing over them.

**Upstream — source posited.** A budget that balances; a sink that absorbs; a missing sink to be found.
**Upstream — method executed.** Emissions from inventories; a growth rate from flask stations; an ocean sink from models and observations; a land sink from vegetation models; a residual computed, under its own name.
**Upstream — instrument.** Stations summing over air, models summing over land and sea, a yearly report summing over all.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a ledger closes; that what does not close is a sink; that molecules that arrive are molecules that left.

**Magnitude observed.** A growth rate, sinks and emissions in petagrams of carbon a year; an imbalance, 0.76 a year root-mean-square in the 2023 budget, largest after the 1991 eruption and the 1998 warmth; gross exchanges at land tens of times the net (nye at values).

**Members agreeing.** A budget closes within an imbalance most years, and a growth rate is observed the same at every station within its resolution.

**Members parting.** No station returns a global mean. A net at land is a small difference of two large opposed crossings. Molecules exchange in years while an excess persists for centuries. A residual carried a sink's name for a decade before a field split it into a land sink estimated and an imbalance under its own name, and in 2023 a land sink fell steeply under heat and drought.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No reservoir, no station, no exchange carries a growth rate or an imbalance.

**Apex standing.** A global mean, a value at no place, toward which every station's reading is corrected.

**Seam standing.** Every surface, carbon crossing both ways at rates unlike on two sides, no wall.

**Passing.** An excess arrives at every reservoir while molecules that carried it have long been exchanged.

**Words carried.** The budget balances. The sink absorbs. The biosphere takes up. The missing sink. The residual sink.

**Stripped.** An imbalance is members not agreeing, published in a field's own units; a sink is a net of opposed crossings; an excess passes while nothing persists.

**Standing in ten.** A bound, fixed as a last — a ledger fixed as closing. All ten stand filled; gross fluxes carry nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.5, a count that was a detector's.

## 2.12 A ring observed at one boundary

**Society reached.** The greenish warbler around the Tibetan plateau: populations continuing north from the south along its western and its eastern sides, each interbreeding with an adjacent one all the way round, two northern forms reaching each other in Siberia and not interbreeding.

**Members reached.** Each population taking its parity at each population it shares with — interbreeding or not — one pair at a time; each bird its song and its plumage.

**Upstream — source posited.** A species as a thing with a boundary; fitness as what determines survival; selection as what acts.
**Upstream — method executed.** Song recorded around a ring and compared; plumage scored; genomes sequenced and gene flow inferred between adjacent populations; a reaching of two forms observed for hybrids.
**Upstream — instrument.** Populations summed into forms; genomes summed into gene-flow estimates.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a species is bounded; that a boundary is somewhere; that adaptation is a species doing.

**Magnitude observed.** Reproductive isolation between two northern forms where they reach each other; song and plumage divergence around a ring; gene flow between adjacent populations (nye at values).

**Members agreeing.** Adjacent populations interbreed round a ring, and terminal forms stay apart where they reach each other.

**Members parting.** No step carries its isolation; every neighbouring pair interbreeds, and a boundary stands at no position. Traits shifted along both arms in their own directions. The 2014 genomes found past breaks in a ring, so continuity is a ring's own history and not a given, and a field entered that as a qualification of its own textbook case.

**Any member carrying it.** No population carries a boundary.

**Apex standing.** A species line, a property of a whole ring and of no place on it.

**Seam standing.** Every pair of adjacent populations, genes crossing both ways at their own rates; a reaching in Siberia one seam that carries no crossing, and it is a ring's.

**Passing.** Genes arrive in the north from the south while no bird flew a ring.

**Words carried.** The species. The species boundary. Fitness determines survival. Selection acts on the population. The species adapts. Ring species.

**Stripped.** Isolation is what a ring's couplings arrive at and no step has; fitness is a population accounting installed as a bird's possession; selection is a field's name for a coupling observed from one side.

**Standing in ten.** A between, fixed as a cut — a species boundary fixed as a line somewhere. All ten stand filled; divergence values carry nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.2, a boundary sharp in each member and at a different position in each.

## 2.13 A web observed at one efficiency

**Society reached.** An aquatic food web, observed by feeding and production rates as an efficiency of transfer between trophic levels.

**Members reached.** Each feeding event taking its parity — eaten, eating — one at a time; each organism at a fractional level.

**Upstream — source posited.** Energy that flows up a chain; a level an organism is on; a law of ten per cent.
**Upstream — method executed.** Production rates per level from growth and biomass; a ratio between consecutive levels; fractional trophic levels from diet; a mean over published models.
**Upstream — instrument.** Stomachs, isotopes and models summing over feeding events and populations.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That energy is a thing passed; that levels are integers; that a mean is a law.

**Magnitude observed.** A mean transfer efficiency of ten per cent, reestimated from forty-eight models rather than assumed; systems since ranging from a few per cent to over twenty; trophic levels from 1.0 at edible algae to 4.2 at tunas.

**Members agreeing.** Production falls level by level, and a mean fits models it was drawn from.

**Members parting.** No ecosystem carries the ten per cent. No organism sits on an integer level; a tuna stands at 4.2, an average of what it eats. Feeding loops back through omnivory and detritus. In a field's own long-term experiment, warming lowers efficiency.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No link carries an efficiency and no organism a level.

**Apex standing.** A level itself — a fractional position no organism occupies, defined as an average of what it eats plus one.

**Seam standing.** Every feeding, the eaten unrelating from an eater at a gut, both changed, production leaving one level and arriving at the next.

**Passing.** What arrives at a tuna is not what stood in an alga; biomass is rebuilt at every step and no molecule passes up.

**Words carried.** Energy flows up the food chain. The ten-per-cent law. Trophic level. The food chain. The keystone species controls. The balance of nature.

**Stripped.** An efficiency is a ratio of productions at a coupling; a level is a mean; a flow is a rebuilding; a balance was released by a field itself into patch dynamics.

**Standing in ten.** A sequencing, fixed as one beat along a chain — a web fixed as a chain energy climbs. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.3, a chain that carries farther than any member moves.

## 2.14 A star observed at one count

**Society reached.** The Sun's core fusing hydrogen, neutrinos it emits, a solar interior they cross, and detectors on Earth each coupling to a flavour, observed as a count.

**Members reached.** Each neutrino arrival, one event at a time, taking at a detector a flavour parity the detector couples to.

**Upstream — source posited.** A flux from a core; a fixed flavour at emission; a count that should match a model.
**Upstream — method executed.** Captures counted in chlorine and gallium over months; recoil electrons in water; charged-current, neutral-current and elastic channels in heavy water; a model's flux from the sun's luminosity and composition.
**Upstream — instrument.** Tanks summing arrivals over months, an event a day or so.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a flavour emitted is the flavour that arrives; that a count belongs to the sun.

**Magnitude observed.** A chlorine rate a third of a model's; an electron-flavour fraction 0.306 ± 0.026 ± 0.024; a total active flux consistent with a model.

**Members agreeing.** Every detector's count matches its model once its flavour coupling is entered.

**Members parting.** Two-thirds arrive in flavours the first detectors could not see. A deficit differed by energy, pp, beryllium and boron fluxes suppressed differently by the sun's own interior. For thirty years members disagreed with a model under a name, the solar neutrino problem, and its disagreement was detectors' couplings.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No event carries a flux; a count was each detector's coupling.

**Apex standing.** A total flux, observed at no single-flavour detector, standing where every flavour is counted.

**Seam standing.** A detector's own between: a flavour it couples to is a parity it returns, and one flux returns a third or the whole by that one coupling — 2.5 at a star.

**Passing.** What arrives is not what left, emitted at one flavour and arriving two-thirds at the others, and nothing was struck on its way.

**Words carried.** The missing neutrinos. The solar neutrino problem. Messengers from the core. The sun burns hydrogen. The surface of the sun. The solar constant.

**Stripped.** A count is a coupling's and an absence was a vantage's; a messenger is a self alternating along its path and observed at one side; a surface is a criterion and a constant varies.

**Standing in ten.** A magnitude, demanded of the sun from a vantage — a count fixed as the sun's own — released by a field with an all-flavour count of 2002. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed at all ten, and the guard's first Neptune; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.5, the same observing at a vacuum.

## 2.15 A cosmos observed at one rate

**Society reached.** Galaxies and light from them — distances by parallax, Cepheids and supernovae, redshifts, and the background radiation's acoustic scale — observed as one rate of expansion today.

**Members reached.** Each galaxy receding at its own velocity with its own motion; each supernova; each patch of the background.

**Upstream — source posited.** A constant the universe has; space that expands; a ladder that climbs to it.
**Upstream — method executed.** A late ladder, parallax to Cepheids to supernovae, fitting one slope; the early, a sound horizon at last scattering carried forward through a model; two compared.
**Upstream — instrument.** Telescopes summing over galaxies; a satellite summing over the sky.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That one number is there; that two ladders return the same thing.

**Magnitude observed.** 67.4 ± 0.5 from an early observing and 73.04 ± 1.04 from the late, in kilometres per second per megaparsec, five standard deviations apart; a red-giant-tip calibration at 69.6 ± 0.8 ± 1.7 between them.

**Members agreeing.** Within each ladder galaxies fit one slope, and within the background one scale.

**Members parting.** Two ladders disagree and no galaxy carries either rate. Intermediate calibrations land between. A field's word for not-agreeing is tension, and a new component has been posted to close it.

**Any member carrying it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A rate today, a slope at no galaxy.

**Seam standing.** A surface of last scattering, an early observing on one side and the late on the other, the same light crossing it; nye at its parity.

**Passing.** Every photon arrives stretched while no galaxy moved through space — a field's own line, that recession is not motion.

**Words carried.** The Hubble constant. The universe expands. The expansion rate. Tension. Early dark energy.

**Stripped.** A constant is a value today and varies by a model's own equations; an expansion is a stretching observed at arrival; a tension is members not agreeing; a posted component stands under the guard at TWENTY-SEVEN 7.7.

**Standing in ten.** A rate, fixed as a fixed magnitude — a rate fixed as a constant, in its very name. Filled at eight; 3 nye and 6 empty, entered as findings.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passed with two findings; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.11, the other global mean at no place.

## 2.16 A pattern observed one arrival at a time

**Society reached.** Electrons from a source through a biprism to a position-sensitive detector, one at a time, a pattern building over tens of thousands of arrivals.

**Members reached.** Each arrival, a flash at one position, taking its parity at a detector one at a time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A little thing that goes one way or the other; a wave that interferes; a duality between them.
**Upstream — method executed.** A field-emission source, a biprism, a detector counting each arrival; a rate low enough that one electron is in an apparatus at a time; a pattern recorded as its count grows.
**Upstream — instrument.** A detector summing arrivals into a pattern over tens of minutes.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That interference needs two things at once; that each electron passed one side.

**Magnitude observed.** A fringe spacing; a count at each position as arrivals accumulate (nye at counts per frame).

**Members agreeing.** Fringes stand where a wave account predicts once tens of thousands have arrived.

**Members parting.** Each arrival is one flash at one position and carries no fringe. One electron at a time is in an apparatus, so no two interfere with each other. No path is assigned to any arrival, and fringes exist at no arrival.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No arrival carries a pattern.

**Apex standing.** A fringe, a position a distribution favours that no arrival makes.

**Seam standing.** A biprism, two paths unrelating at a nothing, one flash arriving from both.

**Passing.** What arrives at a detector is a position; what left a source took neither path.

**Words carried.** The electron interferes with itself. Wave–particle duality. The electron goes through both. The particle.

**Stripped.** A pattern is a society observing and an arrival is an emanation; a little thing is installed behind a flash, and a coupling is where a self is.

**Standing in ten.** An arriving, fixed as something behind it — a particle behind a flash. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 5.3, an electron's own door observing, and its ledger row; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.5, an arrival that was a detector's.

## 2.17 An engine observed one electron at a time

**Society reached.** A metallic island carrying one extra electron or none, a detector observing which, a gate acting on its observing, and a bath at a stated temperature.

**Members reached.** Each electron tunnelling onto or off an island; each measurement; each move of a gate.

**Upstream — source posited.** A sorter who measures for nothing; information as a fuel; a bound that is always paid.
**Upstream — method executed.** An island's charge state observed by a single-electron transistor; a gate shifted when an electron is found on one side, work extracted against a bath; a cycle repeated and work per cycle set against kT ln 2 and against measured information.
**Upstream — instrument.** A detector and gate summing over many cycles, each cycle's trajectory recorded.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That measurement is free; that information is a thing stored; that a bound is a floor.

**Magnitude observed.** Extracted work per cycle as a fraction of kT ln 2 (nye at value); a measurement error; mutual information between island and detector.

**Members agreeing.** Average work follows the second law with an information term entered.

**Members parting.** Single cycles fall above and below a bound. A detector acts back on an island. A bath carries on at its own rate, and a bound is approached only as a cycle slows.

**Any member carrying it.** No. No cycle carries a mean, and no electron carries information.

**Apex standing.** Mutual information, a correlation across an island–detector between owned by neither.

**Seam standing.** A tunnel junction, an electron crossing both ways at rates a gate moves, no wall.

**Passing.** What arrives at a detector is a parity; nothing crosses from island to detector but a correlation.

**Words carried.** The demon. Information is physical. The engine converts information to energy. The measurement extracts work.

**Stripped.** A demon is a member of a society it was posted outward of; a fuel is a correlation; a bound is reached at a society's own rate.

**Standing in ten.** A carry, fixed as a store — information fixed as a thing stored. All ten stand filled; a work value carries nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 5.12, a demon's door observing, and its ledger row; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.4, a criterion placed from an observer's side.

## 2.18 A molecule observed at one work

**Society reached.** A single RNA hairpin held between two beads in optical tweezers, pulled open and released, hundreds of times, work of each pull recorded.

**Members reached.** Each pull, its own trajectory and its own work, one at a time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A free energy a molecule has; a second law that each process obeys; dissipation as waste.
**Upstream — method executed.** A force–extension curve integrated to a work per pull; a distribution of works over pulls; an exponential average taken to recover an equilibrium free-energy difference; forward and reverse distributions compared.
**Upstream — instrument.** Tweezers summing each pull into a work, and an experiment summing pulls into a distribution.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a free energy is a property carried by a molecule; that work above it is lost; that no process gives work below it.

**Magnitude observed.** A free-energy difference of unfolding; mean work at each pulling rate; a spread; a fraction of pulls returning work below a free energy.

**Members agreeing.** An exponential average over pulls returns an equilibrium free energy at every rate, and forward and reverse distributions cross at it.

**Members parting.** No pull carries a free energy. Mean work stands above it at every rate. Single pulls return work below it, a field's own word violation, and they must, for an average to hold.

**Any member carrying it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A crossing of two distributions, a free energy, a work no pull returns.

**Seam standing.** A molecule's own barrier, crossed both ways at tweezers' rate, no wall.

**Passing.** A free energy arrives from a distribution; each pull arrives with a work that is not it.

**Words carried.** The molecule has a free energy. The second law is violated on single trajectories. Dissipation is lost. The equality recovers.

**Stripped.** Free energy is an observing over a society; violation is a member's own parity; dissipation is a spread at a coupling.

**Standing in ten.** A bound, fixed as a last — the second law fixed as a bound each member obeys rather than a society's. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an arrival at 5.1, whose ghost this society stands beneath; its addresses stand there.

## 2.19 A mixture observed at one constant

**Society reached.** Hydrogen and iodine forming hydrogen iodide and returning, an equilibrium measured in both directions at the close of the nineteenth century, after esters' from 1862, and exchange at equilibrium observed since by isotopes.

**Members reached.** Each reaction event, forward or reverse, one at a time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A state a mixture reaches and rests in; a constant a reaction has.
**Upstream — method executed.** A forward rate measured from pure reactants, the reverse from pure product, a constant computed as their ratio and compared with a composition; labelled atoms followed at equilibrium.
**Upstream — instrument.** Sealed bulbs at one temperature summed over time; a label summed over molecules.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That at equilibrium nothing happens; that a constant is a mixture's property.

**Magnitude observed.** Two rate constants; an equilibrium constant; its movement with temperature (nye at values).

**Members agreeing.** A ratio of rate constants matches a composition, and the composition stands while labels cross.

**Members parting.** Labelled atoms cross both ways while a composition stands; no molecule is at equilibrium; a constant moves with temperature by a field's own equation.

**Any member carrying it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A composition, standing at every grain and occupied by no molecule.

**Seam standing.** A reaction's own crossing, both ways at equal rates, one event at a time.

**Passing.** A composition arrives while molecules carrying it turn over.

**Words carried.** The reaction reaches equilibrium. The equilibrium constant. Nothing further happens. Dynamic equilibrium.

**Stripped.** Equal opposed rates are a field's own statement of alternating; a constant is a ratio at a coupling; a rest is a window's.

**Standing in ten.** A rate, fixed as a fixed magnitude — a constant fixed as a mixture's own rest. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an arrival at 5.2; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.11, the other ledger that closes by crossings.

## 2.20 A protein observed at one melting point

**Society reached.** A small protein unfolding as temperature rises, observed by calorimetry as a heat-capacity curve with a midpoint, and by single-molecule fluorescence as two populations exchanging.

**Members reached.** Each molecule, folded or unfolded at each moment, crossing at its own time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A native state a protein is; a melting point it has.
**Upstream — method executed.** A curve's midpoint taken as a melting temperature; an enthalpy from a curve's area and again from its steepness, two compared as a test of two states; single molecules watched crossing.
**Upstream — instrument.** A calorimeter summing over a population; a microscope resolving one molecule at a time.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a midpoint is a temperature at which a protein melts; that a molecule is at a midpoint.

**Magnitude observed.** A midpoint; two enthalpies and their ratio; widths; a cold-side unfolding temperature where reached (nye at values).

**Members agreeing.** Where two enthalpies agree a population acts as one, and single-molecule populations sit at a curve's two sides.

**Members parting.** No molecule is at a midpoint; each is folded or not. Where enthalpies disagree members part into intermediates. A protein unfolds at heat and at cold both, a field's own cold denaturation.

**Any member carrying it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A midpoint, a property of a curve and of no molecule — a threshold's form at 2.4, at a protein.

**Seam standing.** A barrier between two states, crossed both ways at every temperature.

**Passing.** A fold passes across a population while each molecule stays what it is.

**Words carried.** The protein melts at its melting point. The native state. Two-state folding. Cooperativity.

**Stripped.** A midpoint is where half the members have crossed; cooperativity is its members acting as one; bounds stand on both sides.

**Standing in ten.** A between, fixed as a cut — a midpoint fixed as a temperature at which melting happens. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an arrival at 5.4; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.4, a fifty-per-cent point.

## 2.21 An enzyme observed at one turnover

**Society reached.** A single enzyme molecule turning over substrates one at a time, each turnover a flash, observed over thousands of turnovers.

**Members reached.** Each turnover, its own waiting time.

**Upstream — source posited.** A machine with a stroke; a rate constant an enzyme has.
**Upstream — method executed.** Waiting times between flashes recorded; their distribution and their correlations; an ensemble's curve compared with a single molecule's.
**Upstream — instrument.** A microscope resolving one molecule and summing its turnovers.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a rate constant is a property; that each turnover takes the mean time.

**Magnitude observed.** A rate constant; a distribution of waiting times; a correlation between successive waits, a field's own dynamic disorder.

**Members agreeing.** An ensemble's curve is recovered from a single molecule's turnovers summed.

**Members parting.** No turnover takes the mean time. Successive waits remember each other, an enzyme's conformation drifting between them. No molecule obeys an ensemble's curve, and the curve is recovered from them.

**Any member carrying it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A rate constant, a mean over waiting times that no turnover carries.

**Seam standing.** An active site, substrate crossing to product at a coupling both ways.

**Passing.** An acceleration arrives at a coupling while an enzyme stays.

**Words carried.** The enzyme's rate constant. The machine's stroke. The enzyme acts on the substrate. Dynamic disorder.

**Stripped.** A rate is a mean; a stroke is many crossings; a disorder is members' own periods showing through.

**Standing in ten.** A rate, fixed as a fixed magnitude — a rate constant fixed as an enzyme's own. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an arrival at 5.5; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.10, members' own periods showing through.

## 2.22 A body observed at one week of glucose

**Society reached.** A healthy person wearing a continuous glucose monitor for days, its trace observed against a fasting sample and a reference interval.

**Members reached.** Each reading every few minutes; beneath it each crossing of glucose into and out of blood.

**Upstream — source posited.** A level a body holds; a normal range; a set point.
**Upstream — method executed.** Readings every few minutes for days; mean, spread, time within a range; a fasting sample; an interval from a reference population.
**Upstream — instrument.** A monitor summing minutes; a clinic summing one morning.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a fasting value is the level; that a reading beyond an interval is a departure.

**Magnitude observed.** A mean; time within a range; excursions after meals; variability, healthy people crossing above a range that marks disease (nye at fractions).

**Members agreeing.** Most readings fall within a range, and a mean sits near a fasting value.

**Members parting.** A trace excurses after every meal at each person's own rate. Healthy people reach ranges that mark disease and return. No moment carries a mean. A fasting sample is one observing of a week.

**Any member carrying it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A mean, a level at every grain and at no moment.

**Seam standing.** Blood, glucose entering and leaving at every instant at unlike rates.

**Passing.** A level arrives while a pool turns over.

**Words carried.** The set point. Normal range. The body maintains its glucose. Glycaemic variability.

**Stripped.** A level is a coupling's, observed over a window; a set point is a mean installed; a variability is members showing through; an interval is a population's.

**Standing in ten.** A magnitude, demanded of a moment from a window — a fasting value fixed as the level. All ten stand filled.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an arrival at 5.11, whose two ghosts this society stands beneath; its addresses stand there.

# 3 Passing at the substrates, one at a time

*Listed for gathering. Each takes its own pass, and each pass looks for the same ten.*

**At molecular grain.** Polypeptide chain. Nucleic acid chain. A lipid bilayer and its folds. Fibrous matrix — collagen, keratin, elastin, cytoskeleton. Water chain. Redox chain. An ion society at a membrane. An enzyme and its substrate. Glycan.

**At cellular grain.** A mitochondrial population within one cell. Cristae within one mitochondrion. Proteome. Transcript population. Organelle membranes — reticulum, apparatus, envelope. Immune repertoire. Microbiome.

**At tissue grain.** Epithelial sheet. Cortical slab. A compartment and its line. Vasculature. Neural population under one voxel. A villus and a crypt. Bone lattice. A tumour margin and an infarct edge.

**At organism grain.** Circadian society. Metabolic budget. A thermoregulating self. Endocrine sway. Gait. Wound.

**At grains beyond living tissue, taken as observable societies.** A vortex in an ecosphere, at a hurricane and a tornado grain. A synchronous area of a grid. Crystal lattice. An electron society in a wire. An atom's electrons. A nucleon's quarks. A population under a dose, a range, or a threshold.

**How a pass carries.** One substrate at a time. Upstream first — a source posited, a method executed, an instrument and its span, an inferencing prior — before any magnitude is entered, since a magnitude arrives already shaped by all four. Then members, agreement, residual, apex, seam, passing. Then the ten, with their empties entered.

**What each pass is looking for.** Similar instantiations of ten, at unlike grains, in fields sharing no instrument. Where the same ten fill at substrates that do not cite each other, a pattern stands. Where a line stays empty under further record, that emptiness is a collection's most valuable single entry.

**Existing, and possibling.** Four entries stand: three substrates filled at all ten, the third at a perceiving self, and the fourth at a vacuum's counting, a vantage observed at theorem grade. One left two lines empty and carries a nye. Substrates above stand unworked, arriving at their own turns.

A fifth stands at 2.6, the first to arrive through the door at TWENTY-SEVEN 7.5 and the first observed at one society rather than summed, its two waters swapping roles under a tip. Two more stand at 2.7 and 2.8, one pattern at two grains — three bound where no two are — at a nucleus and at cold atoms, in fields sharing no instrument, which is a recurrence a collection is looking for, at this Part. Three more stand at 2.9 to 2.11, at a phospholipid, a tissue and a planet, each carrying a residual word a field uses verbatim — leak, variability, imbalance — and at 2.10 a ghost a field released twice in its own record. Two more stand at 2.12 and 2.13, at a species and an ecosystem, and 2.14 and 2.15 at the sun and the cosmos, so that one entry now stands at every row of a nesting table from the vacuum to the sky. Two above the planet carry the same observing as a vacuum at 2.5 — a count was a vantage's — and 2.15 is the first arrival entered with two findings, a nye and an emptiness, which the door now admits. Two societies of state science stand at 2.16 and 2.17, each observed one member at a time: a pattern that exists at no arrival, and an engine whose fuel is a correlation owned by neither side. Five stand at 2.18 to 2.22 beneath ghosts entered at TWENTY-SEVEN — a pulled molecule, a mixture, a melting protein, a single enzyme and a monitored body — each a society its ghost was observed across, so that entry and arrival now address each other in both directions for every ghost the door has caught.

An observation that strains a pattern is as valuable a coupling as one that fills it, and its straining is entered.
