# 1 Specifying the pattern, gathering toward it

## 1.1 Observations from the fields, each seating at its society

Observations are from science, medicine, engineering and same-existing-societies, and each one seats with its own same-existing-society, an observing across it.

Each entry is its members, what stood upstream of observing, a magnitude an observing returns across members, where they co-competence, and what its account holds where they do not.

Each entry is an observing, one at a time. With an entry's end, anyone who follows its observation knows what this same-existing-society is, what fixes before anyone looks, what number an observing returns across members, which member has that number, and what its account holds with positions where no agreement stands.

Every line is one its record holds. Any observation an entry omits is a defect of that entry, correctable by anyone standing where its record stands. No entry sets an observation aside for not fitting. Technology is all or none at all.

## 1.2 Specifying the pattern in advance, each entry a pattern's matching

There is no inferring here. With disequilibria each thing is changing with each momentary until it bi-couples, and an entry is a pattern's matching, not a concluding. A collection specifies a pattern beforehand and gathers toward it, and whatever a self observes is what a collection resolves.

Its pattern, all ten of it or none:

- **(i)** a same-existing-society is its members, each taking a parity with its own between, one at a time;
- **(ii)** an observing returns a magnitude across members, and an account holds it as a property of a same-existing-society, measuring with observers' own units;
- **(iii)** something stood upstream of observing — a source positing, a method executing, an instrument summing, an inferencing before any observing;
- **(iv)** some instrument resolves its members, and each takes its own parity;
- **(v)** no member has its magnitude;
- **(vi)** an account holds something with positions where members do not agree, under a word;
- **(vii)** a position stands that no member occupies;
- **(viii)** two unrelate across a nothing, with couplings across co-sequencing on two sides;
- **(ix)** what a self observes with one end is not what stood with its other;
- **(x)** ten unchangeables of Exhibit TWENTY-TWO stand with a substrate as one progressioning.

Where a pattern matches with every line, an entry stands full. Where a line does not match, that line enters empty and its emptiness is a finding. There is no inferring from a fill and none from an empty.

**Through the door.** From this version, observations enter through the door of TWENTY-SEVEN 7.5, where a self observes ten lines is or is-not with every record from fields — a proton, a set point, a sorter, a pair of waters alike. What fails a line with its field's sentence installing it, the door catches there as a ghost; what fails with nothing installing it stands among that registry's controls; what passes every line enters here, with ten lines above, with its own grain and with its upstream as a record recovers it. A door record stays with the door, its label stays, and what a self observes here is not what stood there. An entry has its door line, one it passes. A passing is its members resolving and no door line a self observes is-not; a door line a self observes empty passes as a finding with its grain, an emptiness being an observing here (1.9), and a same-existing-society can pass the door and still stand here with its upstream line empty. Five entries, 2.1 to 2.5, stand from before the door; their door records stand with TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, and 2.2 passes with its two empties as findings. Three door lines — abundancing, bound and reach: a self's own surfacing and inseparating, and a same-existing-society's torusing with nothing above it, by Exhibit ONE's names — have no line among ten above; an entry holds them, its words stripping, until a next version widens a pattern.

**Not an entry.** A same-existing-society whose members no instrument resolves yet, which is a possibling and enters as such, with its grain. An observation with no same-existing-society under it. An observing whose units observers do not use.

## 1.3 Upstream of the observing, the line going against the current

This is a line a collection exists for, and it goes against a field's current.

An observation is not bare. Before any observing, a field posits a source, settles a method, builds an instrument to sum over something, and makes an inferencing about what kind of thing is there. By an explaining's publishing, all four stand as part of it and none of them enters as data.

A geodesic method goes upstream from observing, freeing position, orientation and scale with each step, and each freeing lands a fresh fixing to free. An entry holds what it finds with each:

**A source positing.** What a field settles a thing comes from, before looking. Usually a one-way and usually further back than anything an instrument measures.

**A method executing.** What procedure returns a number at all, and what it requires to be true before it returns one.

**An instrument, and what it sums.** Every instrument sums, and summing is what returns a signal. An entry holds the span it sums over — how many members, over what interval — and what an instrument returns where members do not agree.

**An inferencing prior to an explaining.** What a field takes as a kind before any observing: that there is one of it, that it has a level, that it sits somewhere, that it persists. These are fixings an observing builds on, and they are older than data.

Where a record does not recover any of four, a line stands empty and an entry holds its emptiness. An empty upstream line is not a clean observation; it is an observation whose upstream a record does not show yet.

## 1.4 An instrument sums, and the magnitude stands at every resolution

An instrument sums, and summing is what returns a signal. So an instrument returns a signal where members co-competence and returns nothing where they do not, and that nothing enters no account.

Finer resolution moves its grain and not its form. With a finer grain an instrument executes one same summing over smaller members, a magnitude stands again, and again no member has it. This is not a fault of instruments. Where members agree, their agreement is co-competencing, and a magnitude is a true observing of it. What does not stand beside it is that anything there has it.

Where an instrument resolves one same-existing-society and not a sum — one pair of waters under a tip, a self watching its roles exchanging — a self observes its members rather than summing them, and a magnitude stands with that one same-existing-society as it stands with a sum. Form is same with one as with many.

**So.** A magnitude across a same-existing-society is an observing of agreement among its members. Each refinement of an instrument returns its same form one grain down.

## 1.5 Forming an entry, the observings it stands at

## 1.6 Holding the form — three forkings and two couplings, one and then the other

Three forkings and two couplings, one and then the other, as with Hard Problem Registry. Each coupling is a bringing-together and not a stepping.

**Fork.** A same-existing-society parts as its members and as what stood upstream of any observing of them.

**Couple.** A magnitude. Its upstream and its members come together and a number stands between them, a number an instrument returns.

**Fork.** Where members agree and where they do not. An observing and a residual, both in observers' own units.

**Couple.** Whether any member has its magnitude. A member having it, and its observing is that member's and an entry stands there. No member having it, and its observing is of co-competencing and its residual is positions with no agreement. Nothing concludes with this line; a pattern either matches with it or does not.

**Fork.** An apex and a seam. A position no member occupies, and a nothing between two that do not relate. A seam is from a field's record: a place two sides stand unrelating, an instrument measuring each. An apex is from a form: a place no member occupies, with no instrument of a field reaching it.

## 1.7 Residuals an account holds where each member has its own, measurable in the observers' units

A residual is what an account holds with positions where its members do not co-competence. It is measurable with observers' own units, and words recur across same-existing-societies:

**Leak**, where a passing does not sum. **Futile**, where a cycle returns no entry to a ledger. **Dark**, where an instrument's condition does not hold. **Noise**, where members take unlike parities. **Baseline** and **resting**, where an observing stands with no occasion an account ascribes. **Heterogeneity**, where a field finds members and enters an average. **Outlier**, where a field discards a member standing between two observings. **Drift**, where a rate does not land. **Error**, where a field enters a spread of members against a mean. **Compensation**, where an observing does not move and a field adds a term for its not moving.

A residual is not a fault and not a loss. It is the exact part of a society that is not agreeing, under a word for absence, and it is usually the larger part.

## 1.8 Holding the fields' words, and stripping the one-ways

Fields write observations as one-way equilibria. A one-way stands within a writing of nature's observing, and an entry strips it. An entry strips three kinds of word, and it holds both its line as a field publishes it and its line as an instrument measures it, so anyone can check its strip.

**Doers.** A subject acting on an object — instructs, drives, governs, pushes, requires, recognises, monitors, decides, sorts, corrects, catalyses. Under each, a coupling going on with a rate.

**Walls.** Confinement, insulation, barrier, gate, exclusion, prevention. Under each, members not chaining, or couplings across sequencing with unlike rates on two sides of a nothing.

**One-ways.** Because, therefore, which is why, so that, causes, makes, is what makes. Under each, two things standing beside each other.

Method: where a field's sentence has a subject doing something to an object, a measurement stands underneath it, and an entry enters its measurement.

## 1.9 Where lines stand empty, and each emptiness is an observing

Five lines can stand empty, and each emptiness is an observing.

**No members resolving.** No instrument takes a same-existing-society finer yet. Possibling, with its grain.
**Upstream not recovering.** A record does not show a source, method, instrument or prior inferencing. A line stands empty and an entry holds which of four.
**A member has a magnitude.** An observing is that member's and an entry stands with its line.
**No residual.** An account closes with nothing elsewhere.
**No apex.** Nothing within a record holds a position no member occupies.

An entry records an emptiness, not the door. An entry omits nothing it considers.

## 1.11 Stating in advance what breaks an entry

**F1.** An entry where a member does have a magnitude.
**F2.** An observation within a record that no entry enters, or that an entry enters against what its record holds.
**F3.** An entry where its residual is physics rather than disagreement.
**F4.** A same-existing-society an instrument resolves finer with its magnitude going on and a member having it, with a finer grain.
**F5.** A same-existing-society an entry describes with terms its observers would not take as their own.
**F6.** A substrate where one of ten stands empty and stays empty under further record. This is a collection's first check to run, and it is one that would show ten wide rather than a progressioning standing.
**F7.** An entry whose upstream lines fill with something no record supports.

F2 and F4 are runnable by anyone with that same record and those same instruments.

## 1.12 A living file, and the nye marks

A collection adds entries as observations come in and revises them as fields publish further record.

Where a line stands from general knowledge rather than from a record documenting it, an entry has a mark **nye** with a specific claim that would need checking. A nye with nothing checkable is a defect.

An entry holds no names and no history. No one can back-credit fairly, and back-crediting stands between anyone and a concept.

# 2 Collecting — societies at their own grains

*Entries stand here, one to an observation, and a collection recomputes their number with each.*

*Entries stand in the order of their working. An order intends and implies no grouping.*

## 2.1 A mitochondrion at one temperature

**The society.** An inner membrane of a mitochondrion, with its ion-translocating proteins, its water, and its reporter molecules.

**The members.** Each translocation, one at a time, with its own position on a membrane.

**Upstream — source positing.** An organelle as a place producing heat, and heat as what drives chemistry.
**Upstream — method executing.** A reporter calibrating against bulk temperature in a beaker, then a reading of it at an organelle's interior a few hundred nanometres across.
**Upstream — instrument.** Fluorescence summing over a very large number of reporter molecules, in time and along a surface.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a temperature stands there; that it is a level; that a steady state holds; that conduction goes through bulk water at bulk conductivity.

**The magnitude.** Temperature. A report of ten to fifteen degrees above the surrounding, cells in culture at thirty-eight giving readings near fifty.

**Members agreeing.** A fluorescence sum returns a level.

**Members parting.** A steady-state conduction calculation returns a maximum rise of ten to the minus five degrees. Two observings stand a millionfold apart, a paradox, observers' own word. Beside it: complexes come apart above forty-three degrees.

**Any member having it.** No. A reconciliation standing within a record is that each translocation has, for a picosecond, a rise of the order an instrument measures, that time-averaging returns a value a calculation gives, and that a steady signal is an appearance that superposition of many reporters in time and space produces.

**Apex standing.** Empty with this grain. A passing with each position goes through a state in neither side alone, and a record holds that with a water grain rather than here.

**Seam standing.** A cristae junction, membrane physically one, with unrelating potential on two sides.

**Passing.** A proton enters at one position, and a proton leaves from another. No proton goes through.

**A field's words.** Furnace. Heat production. Waste. Temperature driving processes. Hot spots. The value is homeostatically maintained.

**Stripping.** A self takes an observing with each position. With substrate starvation, substrate modification, lower demand, transporter inhibition and respiratory poisons displacing it, its observing falls and returns to its value.

**Standing in ten.** A middle, fixing as a thing that sits. All ten stand full with this substrate.

## 2.2 A chromatin domain at one boundary

**The society.** A chromatin fibre across a population of cells.

**The members.** Each allele, each with its own conformation.

**Upstream — source positing.** A folding code in marks along its fibre.
**Upstream — method executed.** Crosslinking, cutting, ligating and sequencing, returning a contact frequency between positions.
**Upstream — instrument.** Summing across millions of cells by construction; a single member returns no map.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That contact frequency holds structure; that there is one structure; that a boundary is a place rather than a position.

**The magnitude.** A domain and its boundary, from population contact frequency.

**Members agreeing.** Boundary positions across members co-locate at particular sites, and a population map returns a sharp boundary there.

**Members parting.** Boundary pairing stands at any moment in something like five to twenty per cent of alleles, and boundaries occur with nonzero probability at all positions. A field holds its remainder as variability.

**Any member having it.** No. Single-member tracing returns domain-like structures with sharp boundaries in every member, at positions varying member to member.

**Apex standing.** Empty.

**Seam standing.** A boundary itself, sharp within each member, with its own position within each.

**Passing.** Empty with this grain.

**A field's words.** Cohesin forms the domains. Depletion abolishes them. The boundary insulates.

**Stripping.** With extrusion going on, boundary positions across members coincide, site by site. Without it, every member still has a boundary, its size, frequency and sharpness going on, and their positions no longer coincide.

**Standing in ten.** An opening, an axis opening and fixing as a place. A bound and a rate stand empty with its record. **nye — processivity of extrusion and its release distribution would need checking against a bound.**

## 2.3 A proton as a passing along water

**The society.** A chain of water molecules, hydrogen-bonding.

**The members.** Each water, taking a proton with one between and sharing one with its next.

**Upstream — source positing.** A particle with a charge travelling through a medium.
**Upstream — method executing.** Conductivity across a bulk volume, converting to a diffusion coefficient by a relation for particles that move.
**Upstream — instrument.** Summing over a whole volume and over seconds, against transfers momentarying in femtoseconds.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That something goes across; that its going has a speed; that a medium stands ready before its going.

**The magnitude.** Proton mobility, under twice a hydroxide ion's and about seven times a sodium ion's, entering as a diffusion coefficient.

**Members agreeing.** Transfers propagate over two to three members nearly in concert, coupling to collective compressions of a chain.

**Members parting.** A probability of reverting to a previous position stands above a probability of going on. Mobility falls above about a hundred and fifty degrees as proton-sharing structures thin. Degassing raises diffusion tenfold, as gas in solution thins chains.

**Any member having it.** No. What a self observes with its far end is not what stood with its near end, and no member moves.

**Apex standing.** A state two waters share, a proton in neither water alone.

**Seam standing.** A channel whose waters stand re-orienting so that sequential hydrogen bonding does not go on. Water goes through, protons do not, no wall anywhere.

**Passing.** Each member takes a parity and shares one. A chain and a passing stand together — hydration structures are unlike, and with positions not existing, where no excess proton stands within a chain.

**A field's words.** The proton hops. The channel prevents proton transfer. The mechanism transports the charge.

**Stripping.** Each member takes a parity with each between and shares it with its next. Where a chain does not stand, no member shares a parity. Where reverting exceeds going on, an instrument still returns an observing as a mobility.

**Standing in ten.** A sequencing, one ordering fixing over couplings. All ten stand full.

---

## 2.4 A threshold at a perceiving self

**The society.** A perceiving self with a detection task: a self, a stimulus source, and an instruction, going on over many trials.

**The members.** Each judgment, one at a time, with its own trial.

**Upstream — source positing.** A limen: an unmoving line below which a self senses nothing, an interior beneath it where what a self does not sense resides.
**Upstream — method executing.** Stimulus intensities stepping across a range, a proportion of detections fitting against intensity.
**Upstream — instrument.** Responses summing over many trials into one response curve.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a threshold stands there; that it is a line; that it belongs to a self's sensing; that below it is a place.

**The magnitude.** A threshold, entering as an intensity at which detection passes fifty per cent.

**Members agreeing.** A sum of responses returns a smooth curve with no break, rising through its whole range.

**Members parting.** No discontinuity stands anywhere along its curve — a line a field enters as an observing appears with no trial. And a fit's point moves with payoff and expectation while its curve's steepness does not: a field's own resolution parts an observing as a sensitivity and a criterion, its criterion a line an observer places, movable by instruction, belonging to an observing and not to a sensing.

**Any member having it.** No. Each judgment is a parity a self takes with its own trial; its threshold is a summing's fifty-per-cent point, a property of a curve and not of any judgment.

**Apex standing.** Empty with this grain. What each trial goes through is with a coupling of self and stimulus, and no line stands on it.

**Seam standing.** A criterion itself: one place an observer's placing and its observing of a world couple, movable only from an observer's side.

**Passing.** A self takes a judgment and observes a stimulus. Nothing goes across a threshold.

**A field's words.** Threshold. Subliminal. Below awareness. The unconscious registering. Absolute threshold, homeostatically stable.

**Stripping.** A self takes a judgment with each trial. A fit's point displaces under payoff, expectation, and instruction, and returns as they return.

**Standing in ten.** A between, fixing as a cut — a line an observer places fixing as a sensing's own edge, with a place installing beneath it. A sway compacting to a point stands beside it, a rate fixing to a value with a fifty-per-cent entering.

## 2.5 A vacuum, counting its particles

**The society.** A quantum field in its vacuum state, and a detector going along a worldline through it.

**The members.** Each detector excitation, one at a time, with its own coupling.

**Upstream — source positing.** A particle count: how many particles a state contains, standing as a state's own property, the same from every vantage.
**Upstream — method executing.** A detector's response, computing and comparing along two worldlines, one inertial and one uniformly accelerating, through one state.
**Upstream — instrument.** A detector's excitation statistics, summing along a worldline.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That how-many stands there; that it belongs to a state; that any competent detector returns the same count.

**The magnitude.** A count — zero along an inertial line, and along an accelerating line a thermal spectrum at a temperature its acceleration sets.

**Members agreeing.** Each excitation is a coupling of detector and field with a detector's own between, and every computation of a worldline returns its observing.

**Members parting.** Two worldlines return unlike counts of one state — an inertial detector an empty vacuum, an accelerating detector a warm bath — a result standing with theorem grade within a field's record. A count has no frame-free answer: how-many was a vantage's, not a state's.

**Any member having it.** No. Each excitation is a parity with its own coupling; a count is a summing's, an attributing backward.

**Apex standing.** Empty with this grain. What each excitation goes through is with a field-detector coupling, and no count stands on it.

**Seam standing.** A horizon an accelerating worldline has — a reach of field it does not couple with — a parting of observable from unobservable belonging to a path, not a state.

**Passing.** A detector comes to an excitation and a field shifts. No particle goes across.

**A field's words.** Particle. Vacuum. Empty space. Particle content. The temperature of the vacuum. Observer-dependence, as a puzzle.

**Stripping.** An excitation is an observing with each coupling. Its statistics displace with a worldline's acceleration and return with it.

**Standing in ten.** A magnitude, a vantage demanding it of a vacuum — a count fixing as a state's own where an observing was a path's. A store stands beside it: a particle fixing still as a thing a state contains.

## 2.6 Two waters at one bond

**The society.** Two water molecules hydrogen-bonding, in a supersonic expansion; and one pair on a copper surface at 6 K.

**The members.** Each water taking a role with a between of its two, donor or acceptor, and each hydrogen taking one with its own, bonding or free, one at a time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A hydrogen bond: a bond from one water's hydrogen to the other's oxygen, a dimer as a unit of liquid water, one structure with a donor and an acceptor.
**Upstream — method executing.** Rotation–tunnelling transitions, a symmetry group of permutations its members can undergo assigning them, fitting to an effective Hamiltonian with tunnelling parameters; potential surfaces grading against a fit.
**Upstream — instrument.** A beam of many pairs, a spectrum summing over them and over a pulse; and, separately, one pair under a tip, counting each exchange.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That there is one structure; that it has a donor and an acceptor; that a bond is between two atoms; that a barrier is a place on a path.

**The magnitude.** A structure, O···O 2.976 Å (for fetch); a binding energy D₀, 1105 ± 10 cm⁻¹; a trimer's 2650 ± 150 cm⁻¹ beside it; and three tunnelling splittings, 11.18, 0.70 and near 0.02 cm⁻¹ in (H₂O)₂, and 1.77, 0.039 and 0.0005 cm⁻¹ in (D₂O)₂.

**Members agreeing.** A spectrum returns discrete tunnelling multiplets at the symmetries a field assigns, and an equilibrium structure fits its constants.

**Members parting.** No level has an equilibrium structure: every level is a superposition across three exchanges, and a structure, averaging over vibration, has a symmetry an equilibrium one lacks. Where members are unlike, their interchange thins. An acceptor switch is a motion of both in concert, not one moving. With excitation, an interchange triples and a bifurcation more than doubles while a bound stands.

**Any member having it.** No. Splittings are a pair's; each lone water tunnels nowhere. Binding is a coupling's, by a field's own words, and in neither water alone.

**Apex standing.** An interchange saddle, two waters equivalent there, neither donor, no level occupying it.

**Seam standing.** A hydrogen bond itself: two waters unrelating across an O···H nothing, their roles swapping with their own three rates, no wall.

**Passing.** A donor role goes to its other water and a label stays. No atom goes between them.

**A field's words.** The hydrogen bond holds the dimer together. Donor and acceptor. The molecule tunnels through the barrier. The acceptor switches. The dimer's structure.

**Stripping.** Each water takes a role with each between and swaps it both ways with a coupling's rate. A structure is an average over its swapping. A barrier is an accounting's own axis, and a passing has no wall.

**Standing in ten.** A two-way, fixing as one side — donor and acceptor fixing as roles not changing — and a field's own spectrum dissolving it whole. All ten stand full; an O···O distance stands for fetch; a bifurcation value stands nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing, the first passing through the door; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.3, a proton as a passing along water.

## 2.7 Two neutrons at one core

**The society.** A lithium-11 nucleus: a lithium-9 core and two neutrons, a halo, with observings in a beam by interaction cross-sections, by Coulomb breakup into core and neutrons, and in a trap by its mass.

**The members.** A core and each neutron, each taking its parity with a coupling, and its pair.

**Upstream — source positing.** A nucleus as a drop with a surface; binding as a content it contains; a neutron as a particle a well holds.
**Upstream — method executing.** A two-neutron separation energy from subtracting masses, masses from cyclotron frequencies in a trap; a radius from a cross-section through a reaction model; a dipole strength fitting to breakup.
**Upstream — instrument.** A sum over many nuclei, each living 8.8 milliseconds — a trap summing frequencies over ions, a beam summing events.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That binding is a magnitude a nucleus has; that a nucleus is nucleons each in an orbit; that two neutrons binding are two neutrons each binding.

**The magnitude.** A two-neutron separation energy, 369.15 ± 0.65 keV; a matter radius, far larger than a core's (nye with values); a pair's correlation from a breakup (nye).

**Members agreeing.** Three stand binding with a mass a trap measures, and a breakup returns a low-lying dipole strength.

**Members parting.** A core with one neutron does not bind. Two neutrons, without their core, do not bind. Binding stands only with three: remove any one and its other two part. A field's own name for this is Borromean, after three rings. Halo neutrons stand mostly beyond a core's surface, at a density a classical turning point forbids.

**Any member having it.** No. No pair has its binding, and no member.

**Apex standing.** A halo: a region outward of a core's surface, neutrons occupying it and not a core, with a density the three set, where a pair's correlation stands that no free pair has.

**Seam standing.** A core's surface, its density thinning over femtometres, neutrons going both ways, no wall.

**Passing.** With breakup three come apart as core and two neutrons, and a self observes a correlation only with their coming apart; no correlating pair goes across.

**A field's words.** The nuclear force binds the neutrons. The core binds the halo. The neutrons orbit the core. The dineutron. Borromean.

**Stripping.** Binding stands with three and with no two. A halo is where a coupling reaches past a surface. A pair's correlation is an observing with a coupling and with no free pair.

**Standing in ten.** An opening, fixing as a place — a binding fixing as a content a nucleus contains. All ten stand full; radius and correlation stand nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.8, one same pattern with atoms.

## 2.8 Three atoms at one scattering length

**The society.** Three caesium atoms in an ultracold gas where a magnetic field tunes a pair interaction; and three helium-4 atoms in a beam, one trimer at a time.

**The members.** Each atom, taking its parity with a pair coupling — a scattering length's sign — one at a time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A pair interaction as a source of binding; a binding state as a property of a potential; three bodies binding only where pairs do.
**Upstream — method executing.** Atoms leaving a trap by three-body recombination against a field, a resonance where a trimer's energy reaches three free atoms, a scattering length from a resonance map; at helium, each trimer's geometry from momenta of three ions after a Coulomb explosion.
**Upstream — instrument.** A cloud in a trap, summing over atoms and time; and, separately, one trimer at a time, diffraction selecting it, a camera imaging it.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That the size of a binding state is a potential's; that attraction is what binds; that a third atom adds to a pair.

**The magnitude.** A loss resonance at negative scattering length (nye with value), a second at a scattering length about twenty times larger, its ratio measuring against a prediction of 22.7; the size and shape of a helium trimer's upper state.

**Members agreeing.** A resonance stands where a ladder predicts, the second at its ratio, and an imaging's geometry matches a prediction's size.

**Members parting.** At negative scattering length no pair binds and three do. States form a ladder, each 22.7 times larger and binding 515 times more weakly than the last, a scale no pair sets. In trimers a camera images, two atoms stand close and the third far, the third at a distance a pair does not reach.

**Any member having it.** No pair has its binding, and no atom.

**Apex standing.** A three-body parameter, a field's own name for a scale a trimer binds with and no pair sets.

**Seam standing.** A resonance, where a pair's scattering length passes through infinity and changes sign, a pair state appearing and vanishing while a trimer stands across it.

**Passing.** Three enter as a trimer and leave as a fast pair and a fast atom; with helium three ions reach a detector and a self observes a trimer from them. No trimer goes across.

**A field's words.** The atoms attract. The pair binds the third. The trimer holds three atoms. Universality.

**Stripping.** Three bind where no two do, with a size pairs do not set, along a ladder a ratio sets. A loss is an observing with a coupling; an image is an observing with one.

**Standing in ten.** An observing, fixing as something behind it — binding fixing as an attraction between pairs standing behind three. All ten stand full; resonance values stand nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.7, one same pattern with a nucleus, from a field sharing no instrument.

## 2.9 A membrane at one potential

**The society.** A cell membrane and ions going through it — potassium, sodium, chloride — with observings by a microelectrode as a resting potential, and by a patch pipette one channel at a time.

**The members.** Each ion going through with its own channel, each channel opening and closing with its own between, one at a time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A membrane as a wall with holes; a pump as what makes a potential; a cell as at rest.
**Upstream — method executing.** A potential reading between an electrode inward and one outward; ions' equilibrium potentials from their concentrations; a reading fitting as an average of them, weighting each by its permeability; single-channel currents recording from a patch of membrane.
**Upstream — instrument.** An electrode summing over a whole membrane; a pipette summing over one channel and many openings.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a potential is something a cell has; that what does not sum is a leak; that a value belongs to a cell type.

**The magnitude.** Near minus seventy millivolts at a typical neuron, minus forty to minus ninety across cell types; potassium's equilibrium near minus ninety, sodium's near plus sixty; a pump's own share a few millivolts (nye with values); single-channel currents in picoamperes.

**Members agreeing.** A potential fits an average, weighting each ion, within a resolution, and single-channel openings sum to whole-cell currents.

**Members parting.** No ion sits at a potential: potassium stands twenty millivolts from its own, sodium a hundred and thirty from its. Ions that set a potential are a minute fraction of a pool and none persists at a membrane. For decades a field holds what does not sum under the word leak, and then resolves the leak into a channel family opening one at a time. With a blocker on it, a pump leaves a potential standing for hours while gradients thin.

**Any member having it.** No. No ion, no channel, no pump has its potential.

**Apex standing.** An average with weights, a value no ion is at equilibrium with, and toward which every ion goes.

**Seam standing.** A bilayer, five nanometres, its two sides unrelating across it, ions going both ways with every instant, with unlike rates.

**Passing.** A potential stands with every point of a membrane while no ion moves farther than a pore; a cation leaving one side shows as a charge with its other.

**A field's words.** The pump maintains the potential. The cell is at rest. The resting potential of the neuron is minus seventy. Leak channels leak.

**Stripping.** A potential is an observing of a coupling with no member at equilibrium; rest is a window's; a value is a type's average; a leak is openings.

**Standing in ten.** A rate, fixing as an unchanging magnitude — a potential fixing as a value a cell has. All ten stand full; a pump's share and permeability weights stand nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.1, one same membrane, at one temperature.

## 2.10 A node at one rate

**The society.** A sinoatrial node, thousands of cells coupling through low-resistance junctions, a self observing it with an electrocardiogram as one heart rate.

**The members.** Each cell firing with its own period, or irregularly, or not at all, each junction bringing current one way each instant.

**Upstream — source positing.** A master cell that dictates a rate; a pacemaker that drives a heart; an intrinsic rate a node has.
**Upstream — method executing.** A rate from an interval between beats; isolating cells and measuring their periods; imaging a tissue cell by cell for calcium and voltage; mapping a site of earliest activation.
**Upstream — instrument.** An electrocardiogram summing over a heart; a camera resolving cells within a node one at a time.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a rate belongs to a cell; that synchrony needs a leader; that a cell that does not fire is failing.

**The magnitude.** A heart rate; each cell's period in isolation and its beat-to-beat variability; a fraction of cells dormant in isolation, more than half; a fraction firing on their own or silent within intact tissue.

**Members agreeing.** Most cells fire with a tissue's common period, and an exit passes one beat.

**Members parting.** In isolation, each cell fires with its own period and its own variability, and more than half fall dormant. Within intact tissue many fire with their own rates or irregularly, or stay silent with local calcium releases only. The earliest activation shifts its site with nerves. A field's own account goes from a master cell in 1978 to mutual entrainment in 1984 to heartbeat initiation without a pacemaker cell in 2020.

**Any member having it.** No. No cell has a heart rate, and no cell that would be its leader stays its leader.

**Apex standing.** A common period, a rate no cell in isolation has and every coupling cell has.

**Seam standing.** Junctions, current leaving a leading cell and reaching a lagging one, both changing, no wall.

**Passing.** A beat reaches an exit while no cell moves and no cell's own firing travels.

**A field's words.** The master pacemaker. The pacemaker drives the heart. The node's intrinsic rate. Heart rate variability. Sinus arrhythmia.

**Stripping.** A rate is a coupling's; a leader is whichever cell a coupling currently reaches first; a variability is members' own periods showing through, a field entering it as health.

**Standing among ten.** A two-way, fixing as one side — a master cell fixing as an actor and others as what it drives — a field dissolving it within its own record, twice. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there.

## 2.11 A planet at one budget

**The society.** A global carbon budget: fossil and land-use emissions, an atmospheric growth rate, an ocean sink and a land sink, each its own instrument estimating it, a yearly sum of them, a residual a field publishes under its own name.

**The members.** Each exchange of carbon across a surface — a leaf, a wave, a chimney, a fire — taking its parity one at a time; each flux a summing over them.

**Upstream — source positing.** A budget that balances; a sink that absorbs; a missing sink for finding.
**Upstream — method executing.** Emissions from inventories; a growth rate from flask stations; an ocean sink from models and observations; a land sink from vegetation models; a residual a field computes, under its own name.
**Upstream — instrument.** Stations summing over air, models summing over land and sea, a yearly report summing over all.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a ledger closes; that what does not close is a sink; that molecules a station observes are molecules a source emits.

**The magnitude.** A growth rate, sinks and emissions in petagrams of carbon a year; an imbalance, 0.76 a year root-mean-square of the 2023 budget, largest after the 1991 eruption and the 1998 warmth; gross exchanges over land tens of times their net (nye for values).

**Members agreeing.** A budget closes within an imbalance most years, and a growth rate stands same with every station within its resolution.

**Members parting.** No station returns a global mean. A net over land is a small remainder between two large opposing exchanges. Molecules exchange within years while an excess persists for centuries. A residual had a sink's name for a decade before a field split it into a land sink it estimates and an imbalance under its own name, and in 2023 a land sink fell steeply under heat and drought.

**Any member having it.** No. No reservoir, no station, no exchange has a growth rate or an imbalance.

**Apex standing.** A global mean, a value no place has, toward which a field corrects every station's reading.

**Seam standing.** Every surface, carbon going both ways with rates unlike on two sides, no wall.

**Passing.** An excess reaches every reservoir long after the molecules that brought it exchange away.

**A field's words.** The budget balances. The sink absorbs. The biosphere takes up. The missing sink. The residual sink.

**Stripping.** An imbalance is members not agreeing, a field publishing it with its own units; a sink is a net of opposing exchanges; an excess passes while nothing persists.

**Standing among ten.** A bound, fixing as a last — a ledger fixing as closing. All ten stand full; gross fluxes stand nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.5, a count that was a detector's.

## 2.12 A ring at one boundary

**The society.** The greenish warbler around the Tibetan plateau: populations going on north from its south along its western and its eastern sides, each interbreeding with an adjacent one all round, two northern forms reaching each other within Siberia and not interbreeding.

**The members.** Each population taking its parity across each population it shares with — interbreeding or not — one pair at a time; each bird its song and its plumage.

**Upstream — source positing.** A species as a thing with a boundary; fitness as what determines survival; selection as what acts.
**Upstream — method executing.** Recording song around a ring and comparing it; scoring plumage; sequencing genomes and inferring gene flow between adjacent populations; observing a reaching of two forms for hybrids.
**Upstream — instrument.** Populations summing as forms; genomes summing as gene-flow estimates.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a species has a bound; that a boundary is somewhere; that adaptation is a species doing.

**The magnitude.** Reproductive isolation between two northern forms where they reach each other; song and plumage divergence around a ring; gene flow between adjacent populations (nye for values).

**Members agreeing.** Adjacent populations interbreed round a ring, and terminal forms stay apart where they reach each other.

**Members parting.** No step has its isolation; every neighbouring pair interbreeds, and no position has a boundary. Traits shift along both arms, each its own direction. The 2014 genomes find past breaks along a ring, so a ring having no break is its own history and not a premise, and a field enters that as a qualification of its own textbook case.

**Any member having it.** No population has a boundary.

**Apex standing.** A species line, a property of a whole ring and of no place on it.

**Seam standing.** Every pair of adjacent populations, genes going both ways with their own rates; a reaching within Siberia one seam where no gene goes, and it is a ring's.

**Passing.** Genes go north from south while no bird flies a ring.

**A field's words.** The species. The species boundary. Fitness determines survival. Selection acts on the population. The species adapts. Ring species.

**Stripping.** Isolation is what a ring's couplings come to, and no step has it; fitness is a population accounting installing as a bird's possession; selection is a field's name for a coupling a self observes from one side.

**Standing among ten.** A between, fixing as a cut — a species boundary fixing as a line somewhere. All ten stand full; divergence values stand nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.2, a boundary sharp with each member and with its own position for each.

## 2.13 A web at one efficiency

**The society.** An aquatic food web, with observings by feeding and production rates as an efficiency of transfer between trophic levels.

**The members.** Each feeding event taking its parity — prey, eater — one at a time; each organism on a fractional level.

**Upstream — source positing.** Energy that flows up a chain; a level an organism is on; a law of ten per cent.
**Upstream — method executing.** Production rates per level from growth and biomass; a ratio between consecutive levels; fractional trophic levels from diet; a mean over models fields publish.
**Upstream — instrument.** Stomachs, isotopes and models summing over feeding events and populations.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That energy is a thing passing; that levels are integers; that a mean is a law.

**The magnitude.** A mean transfer efficiency of ten per cent, a reestimate from forty-eight models rather than an assumption; systems since ranging from a few per cent to over twenty; trophic levels from 1.0 for edible algae to 4.2 for tunas.

**Members agreeing.** Production falls level by level, and a mean fits models it comes from.

**Members parting.** No ecosystem has ten per cent. No organism sits on an integer level; a tuna stands on 4.2, an average of what it eats. Feeding loops back through omnivory and detritus. With a field's own long-term experiment, warming lowers efficiency.

**Any member having it.** No. No link has an efficiency and no organism a level.

**Apex standing.** A level itself — a fractional position no organism occupies, a field defining it as an average of what it eats plus one.

**Seam standing.** Every feeding, a prey unrelating from an eater across a gut, both changing, production leaving one level and reaching its next.

**Passing.** What reaches a tuna is not what stood within an alga; biomass rebuilds with every step and no molecule passes up.

**A field's words.** Energy flows up the food chain. The ten-per-cent law. Trophic level. The food chain. The keystone species controls. The balance of nature.

**Stripping.** An efficiency is a ratio of productions across a coupling; a level is a mean; a flow is a rebuilding; a field itself dissolves a balance, with patch dynamics its next.

**Standing among ten.** A sequencing, fixing as one beat along a chain — a web fixing as a chain energy climbs. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.3, a chain that passes farther than any member moves.

## 2.14 A star at one count

**The society.** The Sun's core fusing hydrogen, neutrinos it emits, a solar interior they go through, and detectors on Earth each coupling to a flavour, with an observing as a count.

**The members.** Each neutrino detection, one event at a time, taking with a detector a flavour parity its detector couples to.

**Upstream — source positing.** A flux from a core; an unchanging flavour at emission; a count that should match a model.
**Upstream — method executing.** Counting captures with chlorine and gallium over months; recoil electrons with water; charged-current, neutral-current and elastic channels with heavy water; a model's flux from the sun's luminosity and composition.
**Upstream — instrument.** Tanks summing detections over months, an event a day or so.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a flavour at emission is the flavour at detection; that a count belongs to the sun.

**The magnitude.** A chlorine rate a third of a model's; an electron-flavour fraction 0.306 ± 0.026 ± 0.024; a total active flux consistent with a model.

**Members agreeing.** Every detector's count matches its model once an entry enters its flavour coupling.

**Members parting.** Two-thirds reach Earth as flavours the first detectors could not see. A deficit varies with energy, the sun's own interior thinning pp, beryllium and boron fluxes each its own way. For thirty years members were not agreeing with a model under a name, the solar neutrino problem, and their not agreeing was detectors' couplings.

**Any member having it.** No. No event has a flux; a count was each detector's coupling.

**Apex standing.** A total flux, no single-flavour detector observing it, standing where a count includes every flavour.

**Seam standing.** A detector's own between: a flavour it couples to is a parity it returns, and one flux returns a third or its whole by that one coupling — 2.5 with a star.

**Passing.** What reaches a detector is not what left, emitting as one flavour and reaching Earth two-thirds as other flavours, and nothing strikes it on its way.

**A field's words.** The missing neutrinos. The solar neutrino problem. Messengers from the core. The sun burns hydrogen. The surface of the sun. The solar constant.

**Stripping.** A count is a coupling's and an absence was a vantage's; a messenger is a self changing and changing back along its path, a self observing it from one side; a surface is a criterion and a constant varies.

**Standing among ten.** A magnitude, a vantage demanding it of the sun — a count fixing as the sun's own — a field dissolving it with an all-flavour count of 2002. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, with all ten passing, and its guard's first Neptune; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.5, one same observing with a vacuum.

## 2.15 A cosmos at one rate

**The society.** Galaxies and light from them — distances by parallax, Cepheids and supernovae, redshifts, and the background radiation's acoustic scale — with observings as one rate of expansion today.

**The members.** Each galaxy receding with its own velocity, its own motion; each supernova; each patch of the background.

**Upstream — source positing.** A constant the universe has; space that expands; a ladder that climbs to it.
**Upstream — method executing.** A late ladder, parallax to Cepheids to supernovae, fitting one slope; an early one, a sound horizon at last scattering a model brings forward; comparing two.
**Upstream — instrument.** Telescopes summing over galaxies; a satellite summing over the sky.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That one number is there; that two ladders return one same thing.

**The magnitude.** 67.4 ± 0.5 from an early observing and 73.04 ± 1.04 from a late one, in kilometres per second per megaparsec, five standard deviations apart; a red-giant-tip calibration of 69.6 ± 0.8 ± 1.7 between them.

**Members agreeing.** Within each ladder galaxies fit one slope, and within the background one scale.

**Members parting.** Two ladders disagree and no galaxy has either rate. Intermediate calibrations land between. A field's word for not-agreeing is tension, and a field posts a new component to close it.

**Any member having it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A rate today, a slope no galaxy has.

**Seam standing.** A surface of last scattering, an early observing on one side and a late one on its other, one same light going through it; nye for its parity.

**Passing.** Every photon stretches on its way while no galaxy moves through space — a field's own line, that recession is not motion.

**A field's words.** The Hubble constant. The universe expands. The expansion rate. Tension. Early dark energy.

**Stripping.** A constant is a value today and varies by a model's own equations; an expansion is a stretching a self observes with detection; a tension is members not agreeing; a component a field posts stands under TWENTY-SEVEN 7.7's guard.

**Standing among ten.** A rate, fixing as an unchanging magnitude — a rate fixing as a constant, by its very name. Full with eight; 3 nye and 6 empty, entering as findings.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, passing with two findings; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.11, an other global mean no place has.

## 2.16 A pattern, one detection at a time

**The society.** Electrons from a source through a biprism to a position-sensitive detector, one at a time, a pattern building over tens of thousands of detections.

**The members.** Each detection, a flash on one position, taking its parity with a detector one at a time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A little thing that goes one way or the other; a wave that interferes; a duality between them.
**Upstream — method executing.** A field-emission source, a biprism, a detector counting each detection; a rate low enough that one electron at a time is within an apparatus; a pattern recording as its count grows.
**Upstream — instrument.** A detector summing detections as a pattern over tens of minutes.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That interference needs two things together; that each electron passes one side.

**The magnitude.** A fringe spacing; a count for each position as detections accumulate (nye for counts per frame).

**Members agreeing.** Fringes stand where a wave account predicts once tens of thousands of detections stand.

**Members parting.** Each detection is one flash on one position and has no fringe. One electron at a time is within an apparatus, so no two interfere with each other. No account assigns a path to any detection, and no detection has a fringe.

**Any member having it.** No. No detection has a pattern.

**Apex standing.** A fringe, a position a distribution favours that no detection makes.

**Seam standing.** A biprism, two paths unrelating across a nothing, one flash from both.

**Passing.** What reaches a detector is a position; what left a source took neither path.

**A field's words.** The electron interferes with itself. Wave–particle duality. The electron goes through both. The particle.

**Stripping.** A pattern is a same-existing-society's observing and a detection is an emanation; an account installs a little thing behind a flash, and a coupling is where a self is.

**Standing among ten.** An observing, fixing as something behind it — a particle behind a flash. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 5.3, an electron's own door observing, and its ledger row; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.5, a count that was a detector's.

## 2.17 An engine, one electron at a time

**The society.** A metallic island with one extra electron or none, a detector reading which, a gate acting on its reading, and a bath with a temperature a field states.

**The members.** Each electron tunnelling onto or off an island; each measurement; each move of a gate.

**Upstream — source positing.** A sorter who measures for nothing; information as a fuel; a bound that a sorter always pays.
**Upstream — method executing.** A single-electron transistor reading an island's charge state; shifting a gate when a reading finds an electron on one side, extracting work against a bath; repeating a cycle and setting work per cycle against kT ln 2 and against information a reading measures.
**Upstream — instrument.** A detector and gate summing over many cycles, recording each cycle's trajectory.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That measurement is free; that information is a thing in store; that a bound is a floor.

**The magnitude.** Work a cycle extracts, as a fraction of kT ln 2 (nye for value); a measurement error; mutual information between island and detector.

**Members agreeing.** Average work follows the second law once an information term enters.

**Members parting.** Single cycles fall above and below a bound. A detector acts back on an island. A bath goes on with its own rate, and a cycle approaches a bound only as it slows.

**Any member having it.** No. No cycle has a mean, and no electron has information.

**Apex standing.** Mutual information, a correlation in an island–detector between, in neither alone.

**Seam standing.** A tunnel junction, an electron going both ways with rates a gate moves, no wall.

**Passing.** What reaches a detector is a parity; nothing goes from island to detector but a correlation.

**A field's words.** The demon. Information is physical. The engine converts information to energy. The measurement extracts work.

**Stripping.** A demon is a member of a same-existing-society a field posts it outward of; a fuel is a correlation; a same-existing-society reaches a bound with its own rate.

**Standing among ten.** A same-existing, fixing as a store — information fixing as a thing in store. All ten stand full; a work value stands nye.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 5.12, a demon's door observing, and its ledger row; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.4, a criterion an observer places from its own side.

## 2.18 A molecule at one work

**The society.** A single RNA hairpin tethering between two beads, optical tweezers pulling it open and relaxing it, hundreds of times, recording the work of each pull.

**The members.** Each pull, its own trajectory and its own work, one at a time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A free energy a molecule has; a second law that each process obeys; dissipation as waste.
**Upstream — method executing.** A force–extension curve integrating to a work per pull; a distribution of works over pulls; an exponential average recovering an equilibrium free energy of unfolding; comparing forward and reverse distributions.
**Upstream — instrument.** Tweezers summing each pull as a work, and an experiment summing pulls as a distribution.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a free energy is a property a molecule has; that work above it goes to waste; that no process gives work below it.

**The magnitude.** A free energy of unfolding; mean work for each pulling rate; a spread; a fraction of pulls returning work below a free energy.

**Members agreeing.** An exponential average over pulls returns an equilibrium free energy with every rate, and forward and reverse distributions meet on it.

**Members parting.** No pull has a free energy. Mean work stands above it with every rate. Single pulls return work below it, a field's own word violation, and they must, for an average to return it.

**Any member having it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A meeting of two distributions, a free energy, a work no pull returns.

**Seam standing.** A molecule's own barrier, a molecule going over it both ways with tweezers' rate, no wall.

**Passing.** A free energy stands from a distribution; each pull returns a work that is not it.

**A field's words.** The molecule has a free energy. The second law is violated on single trajectories. Dissipation is lost. The equality recovers.

**Stripping.** Free energy is an observing over a same-existing-society; violation is a member's own parity; dissipation is a spread across a coupling.

**Standing among ten.** A bound, fixing as a last — the second law fixing as a bound each member obeys rather than a same-existing-society's. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an entry addressing 5.1, whose ghost this same-existing-society stands beneath; its addresses stand there.

## 2.19 A mixture at one constant

**The society.** Hydrogen and iodine forming hydrogen iodide and returning, an equilibrium a field measures both directions as the nineteenth century closes, after esters' from 1862, and since then, exchange at equilibrium with isotope labels.

**The members.** Each reaction event, forward or reverse, one at a time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A resting state a mixture reaches; a constant a reaction has.
**Upstream — method executing.** A forward rate measuring from pure reactants, a reverse rate from pure product, a constant computing as their ratio and comparing with a composition; following atoms with a label at equilibrium.
**Upstream — instrument.** Bulbs with a seal, of one temperature, summing over time; a label summing over molecules.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That at equilibrium nothing happens; that a constant is a mixture's property.

**The magnitude.** Two rate constants; an equilibrium constant; its movement with temperature (nye for values).

**Members agreeing.** A ratio of rate constants matches a composition, which stands while labels go both ways.

**Members parting.** Atoms with a label go both ways while a composition stands; no molecule is at equilibrium; a constant moves with temperature by a field's own equation.

**Any member having it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A composition, standing with every grain and no molecule occupying it.

**Seam standing.** A reaction's own between, both ways with equal rates, one event at a time.

**Passing.** A composition stands while the molecules with it turn over.

**A field's words.** The reaction reaches equilibrium. The equilibrium constant. Nothing further happens. Dynamic equilibrium.

**Stripping.** Equal opposing rates are a field's own statement of one and then the other; a constant is a ratio across a coupling; a rest is a window's.

**Standing among ten.** A rate, fixing as an unchanging magnitude — a constant fixing as a mixture's own rest. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an entry addressing 5.2; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.11, an other ledger that closes by exchanges.

## 2.20 A protein at one melting point

**The society.** A small protein unfolding as temperature rises, with observings by calorimetry as a heat-capacity curve with a midpoint, and by single-molecule fluorescence as two populations exchanging.

**The members.** Each molecule, folding or unfolding with each moment, each going over with its own timing.

**Upstream — source positing.** A native state a protein is; a melting point it has.
**Upstream — method executing.** Taking a curve's midpoint as a melting temperature; an enthalpy from a curve's area and again from its steepness, comparing two as a test of two states; watching single molecules go over.
**Upstream — instrument.** A calorimeter summing over a population; a microscope resolving one molecule at a time.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a midpoint is a temperature at which a protein melts; that a molecule is at a midpoint.

**The magnitude.** A midpoint; two enthalpies and their ratio; widths; a cold-side unfolding temperature where a field reaches it (nye for values).

**Members agreeing.** Where two enthalpies agree a population acts as one, and single-molecule populations sit on a curve's two sides.

**Members parting.** No molecule stands on a midpoint; each is in a fold or not. Where enthalpies disagree members part as intermediates. A protein unfolds with heat and with cold both, a field's own cold denaturation.

**Any member having it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A midpoint, a property of a curve and of no molecule — a threshold's form of 2.4, with a protein.

**Seam standing.** A barrier between two states, molecules going over it both ways with every temperature.

**Passing.** A fold passes across a population while each molecule stays what it is.

**A field's words.** The protein melts at its melting point. The native state. Two-state folding. Cooperativity.

**Stripping.** A midpoint is where half its members go over; cooperativity is its members acting as one; bounds stand on both sides.

**Standing among ten.** A between, fixing as a cut — a midpoint fixing as a melting temperature. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an entry addressing 5.4; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.4, a fifty-per-cent point.

## 2.21 An enzyme at one turnover

**The society.** A single enzyme molecule turning over substrates one at a time, each turnover a flash, with observings over thousands of turnovers.

**The members.** Each turnover, its own waiting time.

**Upstream — source positing.** A machine with a stroke; a rate constant an enzyme has.
**Upstream — method executing.** Recording waiting times between flashes; their distribution and their correlations; comparing an ensemble's curve with a single molecule's.
**Upstream — instrument.** A microscope resolving one molecule and summing its turnovers.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a rate constant is a property; that each turnover takes the mean time.

**The magnitude.** A rate constant; a distribution of waiting times; a correlation between successive waits, a field's own dynamic disorder.

**Members agreeing.** A sum of a single molecule's turnovers recovers an ensemble's curve.

**Members parting.** No turnover takes the mean time. Successive waits remember each other, an enzyme's conformation drifting between them. No molecule obeys an ensemble's curve, and a sum of them recovers it.

**Any member having it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A rate constant, a mean over waiting times that no turnover has.

**Seam standing.** An active site, substrate going to product across a coupling both ways.

**Passing.** An acceleration stands with a coupling while an enzyme stays.

**A field's words.** The enzyme's rate constant. The machine's stroke. The enzyme acts on the substrate. Dynamic disorder.

**Stripping.** A rate is a mean; a stroke is many turnovers; a disorder is members' own periods showing through.

**Standing among ten.** A rate, fixing as an unchanging magnitude — a rate constant fixing as an enzyme's own. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an entry addressing 5.5; its addresses stand there. Beside it here: 2.10, members' own periods showing through.

## 2.22 A body at one week of glucose

**The society.** A healthy person wearing a glucose monitor reading every few minutes for days, a self observing its trace against a fasting sample and a reference interval.

**The members.** Each reading every few minutes; beneath it each passage of glucose to and from blood.

**Upstream — source positing.** A level a body holds; a normal range; a set point.
**Upstream — method executing.** Readings every few minutes for days; mean, spread, time within a range; a fasting sample; an interval from a reference population.
**Upstream — instrument.** A monitor summing minutes; a clinic summing one morning.
**Upstream — inferencing prior.** That a fasting value is the level; that a reading beyond an interval is a departure.

**The magnitude.** A mean; time within a range; excursions after meals; variability, healthy people going above a range that marks disease (nye for fractions).

**Members agreeing.** Most readings fall within a range, and a mean sits near a fasting value.

**Members parting.** A trace excurses after every meal with each person's own rate. Healthy people reach ranges that mark disease and return. No moment has a mean. A fasting sample is one observing of a week.

**Any member having it.** No.

**Apex standing.** A mean, a level with every grain and with no moment.

**Seam standing.** Blood, glucose entering and leaving each instant, with unlike rates.

**Passing.** A level stands while a pool turns over.

**A field's words.** The set point. Normal range. The body maintains its glucose. Glycaemic variability.

**Stripping.** A level is a coupling's, an observing over a window; a set point is a mean an account installs; a variability is members showing through; an interval is a population's.

**Standing among ten.** A magnitude, a window demanding it of a moment — a fasting value fixing as its level. All ten stand full.

**Door.** TWENTY-SEVEN 7.8, an entry addressing 5.11, whose two ghosts this same-existing-society stands beneath; its addresses stand there.

# 3 Passing at the substrates, one at a time

*A list for gathering. Each takes its own pass, and each pass looks for the same ten.*

**Molecular grain.** Polypeptide chain. Nucleic acid chain. A lipid bilayer and its folds. Fibrous matrix — collagen, keratin, elastin, cytoskeleton. Water chain. Redox chain. An ion same-existing-society across a membrane. An enzyme and its substrate. Glycan.

**Cellular grain.** A mitochondrial population within one cell. Cristae within one mitochondrion. Proteome. Transcript population. Organelle membranes — reticulum, apparatus, envelope. Immune repertoire. Microbiome.

**Tissue grain.** Epithelial sheet. Cortical slab. A compartment and its line. Vasculature. Neural population under one voxel. A villus and a crypt. Bone lattice. A tumour margin and an infarct edge.

**Organism grain.** Circadian same-existing-society. Metabolic budget. A thermoregulating self. Endocrine sway. Gait. Wound.

**Grains other than living tissue.** A population under a dose, a range, or a threshold. A nucleon's quarks. A synchronous area of a grid, an engineering set, non-living. A vortex with an ecosphere, with a hurricane and a tornado grain, and a crystal lattice: each an observing's form, and with an account installing it as a thing, each is ghost-form, as Living Ghost Registry 7.3 has it. Electrons with a wire and an atom's electrons: an electron is a nothing ghost, Living Ghost Registry 5.3.

**How a pass goes.** One substrate at a time. Upstream first — a source positing, a method executing, an instrument and its span, an inferencing prior — before any magnitude enters, since all four already shape a magnitude. Then members, agreement, residual, apex, seam, passing. Then the ten, with their empties entering.

**What each pass is looking for.** Similar instantiations of ten, with unlike grains, from fields sharing no instrument. Where the same ten fill with substrates that do not cite each other, a pattern stands. Where a line stays empty under further record, that emptiness is a collection's most valuable single entry.

**Existing, and possibling.** Four entries stand: three substrates full with all ten, the third with a perceiving self, and the fourth with a vacuum's counting, a vantage an observing shows to theorem grade. One leaves two lines empty and has a nye. Substrates above wait for working, each with its own turn.

A fifth stands with 2.6, the first to enter through TWENTY-SEVEN 7.5's door and the first a self observes as one same-existing-society rather than as a sum, its two waters swapping roles under a tip. Two more stand with 2.7 and 2.8, one pattern with two grains — three binding where no two do — a nucleus and cold atoms, from fields sharing no instrument, a recurrence a collection is looking for, within this Part. Three more stand with 2.9 to 2.11, a phospholipid, a tissue and a planet, each having a residual word a field uses verbatim — leak, variability, imbalance — and with 2.10 a ghost a field dissolves twice within its own record. Two more stand with 2.12 and 2.13, a species and an ecosystem, and 2.14 and 2.15 with the sun and the cosmos, so that one entry now stands with every row of a nesting table from a vacuum to the sky. Two above a planet have an observing same-as a vacuum's with 2.5 — a count was a vantage's — and 2.15 is the first entry with two findings, a nye and an emptiness, which TWENTY-SEVEN's door now admits. Two same-existing-societies of state science stand with 2.16 and 2.17, each an observing one member at a time: a pattern no detection has, and an engine whose fuel is a correlation in neither side alone. Five stand with 2.18 to 2.22 beneath ghosts TWENTY-SEVEN enters — a molecule under pulling, a mixture, a melting protein, a single enzyme and a body under a monitor — each a same-existing-society a self observes its ghost across, so that entry and door record now address each other both ways for every ghost TWENTY-SEVEN's door catches.

An observation that strains a pattern is as valuable a coupling as one that fills it, and an entry enters its straining.
